Problem with Honda 2009 rancher not shifting
#1
Ever since this machine was new there were intermittent shifting problems. I would go from 1st. to 2nd and it wouldn't shift until you tried several times. But it was intermittent. Now it won't shift unless I manually do it and then start it in neutral and it may go into reverse. the other problem is that I live in an isolated area and do not have a trailer or pickup to transport the machine to the dealer.

to Merryman,
First of all, please forgive me for any errors I make on this forum since I am brand new to this. As for your question regarding my Honda Rancher not shifting. The indicator shows reverse or R. This is a steady indicator without any fluctuations or blinking. The ending will not even turn over unless I manually use the tool to get it into neutral. It will, sometimes shift to first gear then I can not get beyond that. The last time this happened I lucked out and got it to reverse and backed up to my barn some thirty feet away. I am going to need this machine to haul my wood after it is cut and split. I sure would appreciate any help.
Thank you

It will only start flashing once the fault is on, but if the gearchange indicator doesn't flash, it is usually a fault with the ES up/down buttons as, if it doesn't get a signal from them, it doesn't know you have tried, so doesn't fault code. However it definitely will fault code when you use the emergency lever, so double check you haven't missed it. Not a lot you can do with the buttons, check the wiring to them and the plug, spray some contact cleaner into them if you can get at the contacts.
It may be worth checking and cleaning out the shift motor, not too difficult on a 420, but it should have fault coded if there is a problem with it. Adjust the clutch, which can't hurt.
