Hello Name is Cooper or Coop for short. I am having some difficulty with "honda safe" mode i am getting a code 4 wich is angle sensoer however i have replaced and attempted to reprogram and after the initial portion of reset I am supposed to be getting a D when in Drive (auto) and am failing to get the D and directions say if no D then angle sensor not installed properly i have reinstalled sensor wih 100 % certinty that I have it spring loaded then i attempt to reprogram only to have same no D when i put it into Drive still get same code angle sensor I have check continuity and is good i have 4 or 5 more harness plugs i going to open spray with electrical contact cleaner then apply some dialectric grease and ill have the all done yet am still stuck in middle of reset cos I can get either angle sensor to take or there must be some other reason i am in safe mode ? But I still am getting the # 4 code what am I not doing should i continue with resett even though i didttcccnot getting the D early on in the reset process. I have pulled shift motor and well jumped from battery to test motor and appears it works? There is a fair amount of resistance if i spin moter by hand is that normal operation. Well anywayd i am co

I once had the shaft that drives the angle sensor break inside the clutch housing, this was on an ES rather than an auto, so it may not apply to you but, of course, it continually gave the angle sensor fault code, and I tried three or four sensors before finding the broken shaft. In truth your fault is probably a wiring problem and I think Honda give a load of tests you can do at the pins on the ECU plug, Such a nightmare I have never tried it, but it may be your best option to find the fault. Shift motors feel "lumpy" if you spin the armature shaft by hand as the armature is attracted to each magnet in turn.

That is quite helpfull cos while changing sensor and behind the sensor plate there is the end of shaft wich locks into backside of sensor giving it spring loaded well that little shaft comes out its about 1.5 inches maybye my shaft is broken in the clutch im almost sure you shouldnt be able to simply pull it out should you???

Afraid I don't know. The 400 model suffered from it's electronics being regarded as so complex (for 2004) that they sold poorly. In fact they have proved to be very reliable machines, but we see few of them and I can't remember ever fitting a new angle sensor to one. From the drawing it looks like it just slides into the hondamatic box in a similar way to the angle sensor, so you will have to ensure it is engaged into the gearbox before fitting the sensor.

Omg I haved made a silly *** mistake I have been getting a code 4 a wich is TP sensor malfunction (throttle Position Sensor) and not an angle sensor malfunction and Im just guessing but Im betting that a tp code will put into safe mode all the same and safe mode im betting is controlled by shutting down any shifting of gears by shutting down the use of the buttons or shift the automatic hence me thinking that I am having a shifting issue when I have a code any code that is putting me into safe mode, I feel pretty stoopid about now especially cos of the level of research into via this forum and hours of reading, anyways I appreciate all the responses I have received now my learning process is out there for all to see oops anyways I will repost my findings or give an update. I would have like to think I was smarter than that and I believe thats where I went wrong I am now thinking I never had a angle shift sensor issue I had a Throttle position Sensor code wich in real time had me thinking that I was having a shifting problem when in fact that is how honda had designed it. I know I will find out but will a tp code put my quad into safe mode and giving me the lack of shifting as a transmission system problem as opposed to it being shutdown by safe mode.

The 400 is a carburettor quad and doesn't need a TPS for setting fueling, therefore only reasons I can think for fitting one, are either to alter advance retard on spark or to control the auto gearchange. So, if it is for gearchanges, will trigger it going it into "safe" mode when faulty.

This was never updated so my experience -
I recently purchased a 2005 rancher TRX400FGA. I was also getting a code 4 TPS.
After looking at things a little bit I found the previous owner put an aftermarket carb on it with NO tps. The 2 electrical connectors going to the carb were just hanging out. I bought a carb off Amazon hooked it up did the calibration and bam no more code 4, changes gears, reverse works, all perfect.
If you run into a rancher with a code 4 verify the stupid TPS MOUNTED ON THE CARB ITSELF.
