JUST BAUGHT A 2000 SCRAMBLER 500. I'VE READ ALL YOUR POSTS AND I'M CONSIDERING DOING SOME MINOR MODS. FIRST, FMF MEGAMAX II MUFFLER, SECOND, K&N FILTER, THEN POTENTIALLY CLUTCH.I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS. EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT THE FMF MEGAMAX II. IS THEIR AN EQUAL/BETTER PRODUCT AVAILABLE ELSEWHERE? WHEN I CHANGE THE AIR FILTER, I'VE READ THAT I HAVE TO CHANGE THE JETTING (THIS IS GREEK TO ME). aNYONE GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR THE BEST SETUP? I.E. BEST FILTER AND BEST JET SETTINGS. ALSO, I'D LIKE TO TRACK MY MILEAGE. IS THEIR AN ADD-ON PRODUCT FOR THIS BIKE? ANY COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATELY APPRECIATED.

Scram,
Ok, first, turn the caps lock off...hehehehe.
You have a great machine with the Scrambler 500.. as for modifications.....
1) Order the K&N Power-Up Kit.. It comes with the filter, pre-filter, care kit, jet kit, complete instructions, and a cool sticker.
2) Personally, I'd go with the Supertrapp IDS pipe and muffler.. It gives more power and tuneability.
3) After these mods'.. you might consider the roller secondary clutch, or just some minor tuning on the primary clutch to suit YOUR driving habits. (NOTE: When you take the cover off the PVT, change the stock Polaris belt for a DAYCO MAX belt.. its better)
4) There IS a Polaris accessory speedometer for the Scramblers that also logs miles and hours traveled!
5) Also, dial up your rear shock to get the rear-end planted harder on full throttle take-offs, snorkel your PVT exhaust to keep from getting the drive belt wet when playing submarine!
Here's a web-site with ALOT of help on mods for the Scramblers..

Good Luck!!

Hey, I just bought my 2000 Scrambler also yesterday and after my first ride last night I can say that this machine is WAY different than my Magnum 500. Great power but this suspension is VERY stiff compared to my Magnum (which I still have and love.) The first things I'm doing to mine are racks front and back, fender flares (got really drenched last night), speedometer, and most importantly softer springs!!! Has anyone experimented with softer springs and/or softer suspension settings on these things?

I wouldn't put softer springs. The Scrambler is just made to be ridden faster. Ride it faster and it soaks it up better. Also, try standing up. The Scrambler isn't designed to be ridden like the Magnum. I agree though, when switching from one to another the Scrambler feels harsh, but you don't notice it too long.

Scram, do what mudmachine said. The K&N filter---whether it makes you faster or not---should be the 1st thing to go on a Polaris.

Clutch settings & jetting settings you can get away with going by reccamendations, but the best way it trial & error. Depending on your riding style, altitude, and temperature the jetting & clutch settings will vary.

Polaris has a speedometer, tripometer, and odometer, I have it. It's pretty good, but pricey.

Congrats to both of you on your recent purchase of 00 Scrambler 500. I bought mine about 2 months ago and i absolutely love it. I think it is without question the best all around quad- offering great features from both the sport and utility market.-- Of course the shock is adjustable and you should check that. Also, mine was stiffer when it was new and over past 2 months it has loosened up a bit. Good luck!

Mudmachine,
Where would I find info on the K&N Power-Up Kit and the Superstrapp IDS pipe. FMF claims you can bolt theirs on with no jetting necessary. Does IDS claim the same. I'm very cautious when it comes to jetting, don't want to screw things up. I'd like to do minimal jetting necessary to accomidate the filter change without having to change jets everytime the temperature changes.

Softer front springs are nice I put them on mine and they take the edge off a little. The rate is not a huge change it shouldn't make you bottom out or anything. I did go up on the main jet with and alter needle setting with my IDS quiet core exhaust. White Bros is working on a E series pipe. Good luck finding a Megamax I think they are discontinued for the SCR. They are coming out with a Powercore 4 II for it sometime. When either of these is coming out is just a guess. The supertrapp is easy to get right now. I would find out which jets the kit you order has in it before I got it. I bought a kit one time from a name brand company that didn't come with big enough jets for a K&N and pipe.

Scram,
http://www.highlifter.com/
They have the complete kit listed for the 98-2000 Scrambler 500's in their "High Performance Kits" section.
I'm sure the parts can be bought individually from other places. I'm not sure about how the prices compare, but their price seems fair.
As for re-jetting, you might get away without re-jetting when you add a K&N filter but when you add the pipe/muffler... you'll DEFINITELY want to re-jet to take full advantage of the new goodies. If you buy everything from one place in a kit form, whether its Highlifter or whoever else, the kit should have the proper jets for your pipe /muffler /filter.
Luckily, jetting isn't quite as critical on 4-strokes as it is on 2-strokes. But, you shouldn't have any problem installing all the new toys with the directions included.
Good Luck!!

All this talk about re-jetting made me get to thinking. I have the 99 Scrambler 500 and when I put the K&N and FMF MegaMax II on it, it seemed to kick real good without re-jetting. How do I know if it needs it??? I just ordered some extra discs for the pipe so maybe after I stack them on it will need re-jetted. What should I listen or look out for to tell if it needs re-jetted. BTW - I looked all through my owners manual and could not find out what the black wire with the phillips head screw on the end coming from the carb area is for. It hangs down on the pvt side and has a gold clip at the end of it for I guess hanging it up on something. It kinda fell off and I am just wondering what it did.

Thank for the great info,

Steve

There are a lot of good information in this thread that you can reference from. The first question you have to ask your self is what type of riding do you do and where. The machine from the factory is generaly tuned for average altitudes, temperatures, riding terrains and rider weights. If you are going to ride mostly in the sand the clutch setup should be tuned accordingly to compensate for the new demands. Once you figure out where and how you are going to ride you should review the parts that you have been introduced to and see if they will meet your needs.

The K&N airfilter is a nobrainer. It is inexpensive and does not realy require any special tuning. The clutch kit should be next. I say this because the PVT system is the middle man between the engine and the rear wheels. If you modify the engine and leave the clutch stock the bike could actually perform worse.

I installed the Aaen Megaphone exhaust on my bike as the second modification and left the clutch stock and i barely noticed a difference. I removed the pipe and installed the Aaen roller clutch kit and noticed an improvement in performance. I then reinstalled the Aaen pipe and noticed that there was a bigger improvement than with out the clutch kit. Unfortunatly modifications need to be matched otherwise they will hinder each others performance.

I personaly believe you should buy a performance kit ( K&N, jet kit, pipe and clutch kit ) from a reputable manfacturer and install it or have it installed at the same time. This is because theses kits contain components and configurations that work well with eachother. The 500 however does not have many differnt kits available.

Good luck
