Firstly, this isn't a bash. Just a question, and something I wondered about once when considering a Sportsman. Has anyone had any problems with the hood piece between the top headlight and the front racks? On most of the used Polaris's I've seen, the hood is loose and seems flimsy. When I was considering one, I figured it wouldn't be long before this piece was loose and rattling all the time. Is this just a preconcieved notion or has somebody ever had a problem with it?

I thought you was told to stay off the Polaris forum. LOL! I have not had a problem with the hood on my Polaris, but it's only a few months old.

 

the way it's held in there I don't think there will be any problem.Try getting one off.Like the way you started out ANDY.

 

No problems on any of the ones that come by here or mine.

I saw one at a honda dealer last week (99 Sportsman 500) and it was loose and flimsy. Made me think of it. This bike had been ridden hard and put up wet though. The dealership had done $600 in repairs on it before they put it out to sell, so they probably nailed it to the guy that traded it in. This guy could easily have run it into a low hanging branch or something though, because this machine looked really beat up.

Like the same idiots that buy a $30,000 pickup and take it straight into the woods and scratch it all to hell the first week. I'd prefer to have a dump truck full of gravel ding up the hood first before I went and ruined it. At least that way, I wouldn't feel as guilty.

I used to ride with a guy who considered a day of riding boring if he didn’t roll his Griz at least once. He was (is) a skilled rider but he sure beat the crap out of that machine. They actually gave him some pretty decent bucks for it on a trade for a new one but I pity the next owner. The racks, handlebars, brake levers and floorboards were all scratched, bent and re-bent. The fenders and fender extensions were loose. The camo skins he had on it looked like a torn-up old rag. It ran OK although some of the controls, like the choke, were broken and the instrument cluster was loose. There wasn’t a single spot on it that wasn’t scratched or dented. He used to just blow off its condition by saying stuff like, “I bought it to ride it and that’s what I’m doing.” Most of the damage came from off-trail riding in thick woods, what I call brush bustin’. I admit that’s fun to do once in a while, breakin’ trail, but running over trees like a tank really takes its toll. When I’d complain about following him off-trail or spend an hour cleaning all the crap off my machine there were many times I know he thought I was being a wuss. Tough. Like someone else said, I paid a lot of money for my quad and I don’t relish the thought of spending a lot more money and time on repairs. I’d rather be riding.

I don’t care that he beat the **** out of his stuff, I just wouldn’t do it to mine. And seeing his abuse is one of the reasons I’ve never bought a used quad.
