660 Grizz with Spidertraxs, Will it Float?
#1
I put these awesome 25"x12.5"x12" Spidertraxs on the new Grizz to widen it up and get it to powerslide, but looking at these huge awesome tires I'm thinking this thing will FLOAT!! Yamaha did a great job keeping the weight down, you can see it everywhere. I put the 10" rear tires in front, that's a lot of inflation on a 600 lb machine. I'm sure I'd have to walk alongside, but I think it will float. Time for a river crossing, except our river is pretty small this time of year.

Like I said, I have had it floating in the water, and didn't have any sputtering problems. I have however had a belt slippage blasting through 6" of water. So, I guess its a horse a piece, I gotta find out exactly where the intakes are for this stuff, and see if I can remedy the situation.. Over all, I love the bike. 400 miles and counting. Should get anouther 75 at least, this weekend.

That's a big 10-4, RedReconRider. Gila, New Mexico is where the Gila river comes out of the Mogollon Mountains into the picturesque farming valley of Cliff and Gila. Very small community, total population of the entire area, under 1,000 people. In the old days we used to take our big 4x4's up the river into the mountains. Everything is closed off now, thanks to the Nature Conservancy, which bought much of the bottom land, and the Forest Service, which liked the whole idea anyway.
The good part of the whole deal was they got the cows out of the river too. And I must admit to seeing some of the local a$$holes doing stupid stuff in the river, like changing their oil!! and pulling trees out just to see if they could and stuff like that. So I guess it's okay that I don't get to go river hopping any more, as long as the cows and the a$$holes don't get to either.
I still don't understand the complete disregard for our little river, the only source of water for hundreds of miles. Using it as a sewer for cattle and a convenient spot to get rid of your motor oil are concepts that escape me.
There are a couple of spots we can still sneak into on our ATV's.
Phelps Dodge, the big copper mining company is the other big player here (they use the water rights from the farms for their mining operations) and they do not like anybody on their land, and they own most of the rest of the river and surrounding fields, So stealth mode is required. As you know, it is a wild river, and floods regularly. Trails dissappear fast. I like riding where I don't have to be looking over my shoulder all the time. That's why we trailer 15 minutes to the Gila National Forest, where we have 15,000 acres with about 500+ miles of trails to ride.
They were trying to make this great riding area a "roadless" area. Not that there weren't any roads, they just weren't maintained, hence "roadless". I am mapping these trails with my GPS so the next round will hopefully go in our favor.

I know what you mean when you mean Phelps Dodge owns a lot of land. I used to live in Morenci where the world revolved around PD and they owned EVERYTHING and I mean everything. A few years back they plowed the WHOLE DANG town and just moved it so they can mine there. I was not alive when it happened but I read about it. So when I lived in Morenci/Clifton we did not have too many places to ride except the San Fracisco River which flooded every few years. I lived about 50 yards from the Frisco so I would just drive up there. It would flood every few years and it would hit the rest of the town but not outs cause it was on a bg mound so it would turn into a island kinda. Then in comes PD again. They said they don't want no more floods and wants to put a levy in in case there is copper in Clifton. And guess whos house happens to be in the way??? At first we refused to sell but when they offered $25000 over the value of the house we said when do you want us out?? So we came to Safford where we still feel the wrath of PD but not as much. I hate multi billion dollar companys that conrtol everything. So all your problems I know cause I went through them.
