Hey guys,

I need some help with a dilema. I want to drop four teeth off the rear sprocket on my Sport. Can I use the 30 tooth axle to axle sprocket off of a 6x6? Or will I have to go and get a custom sprocket made by Sidewinder?

The reason I'm doing this is not to make it faster (it goes fast enough righ now, thank you), but to slow down the rear wheels so it doesn't spin as much on take off.

Right now, it's geared 13/34. I want to make it at least 13/30. I DO NOT want to use one of those horrible Sidewinder sprockets if I can help it.

Thanks in advance!

Mike,

I have a 30T rear I got from HSP. I think it is a Sunstar, will have to check. If the mount holes are the same between 97-99 I'll let you have it cheap.

Mike,

How are you doing? Finally ready to change that back sprocket. I put some 22" tires on the back of mine yesterday. Man, what a difference. If I wouldn't have had my clutching set up so soft for those 25x13, I would have been doing wheelies all day. I did this at work.

When I came home, I put the 34 tooth on my back(had the 38). Today I'm going to harden my clutching. It is still a little to easy to spin those little 22". What can I say, those 25" tires rob alot of power. I'll have to end up putting those 25" back on with the 38 tooth when the snow starts staying on the ground. My tire chains are built for the 25" tires.

Those smaller tires sure look wierd. I guess I'm just so use to those 25". Now, my one mechanic tells me my quad looks like a stubby tailed dog, dragging its a$$. He is my motorcycle mechanic, doesn't like quads.

Good Luck,

Chris

I bought my 30 tooth rear sprocket from polaris. You can also soften up the primary spring so it doesnt hit as hard, thus wont spin the wheels so quickly. On my bike I went from a red spring with the yellow stripe to the brown spring.

Thanks again for all of the answers! There really wouldn't be a problem with the rear wheels spinning, but some dummy (me) put on a 3"+ swingarm because he didn't want it to wheelie too much. I think I went a bit overboard. For the type of riding I do, 1.5" to 2"+ would have been perfect. Oh well, live and learn. I make mistakes so you don't have to.

dailyrider,

thanks! I really wasn't sure if it would fit. I was looking at the parts manuals for the 2000 year quads, and they looked the same on my computer, but I wasn't sure.

AZ400L,

I might take you up on that offer. It would be easier than having my dealer down home order it (not to mention quicker).

Chris,

Tell that motorcycle mechannic he doesn't know what he's talking about. I think your quad looks pretty sharp. I was surprised how nice that year looks without the racks. Losing four teeth off the back sprocket, in your case of going to smaller rear tires, might not have helped all that much. If you can't get it to stop spinning with clutching, you too might be a candidate for a 30 tooth rear. How is your top end, did you lose much or is it still the same. The real benefit you'll see is when you take it into a corner, there's a lot less tire flex.

Ronnnnn,

I already have the HPD brown spring in mine. Like I said above, the swingarm is the problem. Although I weigh aroung 250 lbs., and the quad another 420, I still have trouble getting weight over the back end.

Mike --

E-mail me before you change the sprocket. I've got some ideas that will get rid of the spin and let you launch hard.

Just think about it. What will spin the tires more on launch, a higher or lower (number) gear ratio and allow you to launch hard.

I need to talk to you about camp too.

Jack
