Why would someone want to spend so much money on a clutch basket? How do you know you need one? Is it worth the cash? I've heard some talk about putting this clutch basket when going to a 440 kit. Is it becasue of the extra power?

 

I have a 440 and the stock clutch held up for almost a year with no problems. Recently my clutch started to squal every now and then. I'm hearing that stock disks and plates work the best but was advised to go with stronger clutch springs. My 440 engine builder suggested using CR500 clutch springs but warned that the clutch would be harder to pull. This is what I'm going to do. I have a Hinson clutch basket with CR500 clutch springs in my '88 350r and the clutch pull is extremely stiff. I need the Hinson basket and clutch springs for the amount of power my motor produces though. I have had Hinson baskets in other quads as well and not once did I have a clutch problem. If you plan on pumping up your motor you will eventually need to upgrade the clutch. The stock clutch in my buddies 440ex has held up good for over a year now.

 

Does the Hinson basket change from seven fiber plates to eight fibers or is this just something Sparks is doing? If so that definatley would provide more surface area and less clutch slippage. My clutch slips a little even with new fibers and steels, however I am running stock springs (416ex modified).

I run cr125 springs and a hinson basket works great !!!

 

One good reason to switch to a hinson clutch basket is stock baskets tend to break over time especially if you do engine mods that give you more horsepower. If your clutch basket breaks it sends shards throughout your case that can destroy gears or bust through the case. The hinson basket is quite a bit stronger and is worth the money, because a case and gears are not cheap.
