I bought a 2000 Polaris explorer, with 48" Polaris plow, Warn 2000# winch, a tank bag, a rear seat bag, and a front left plastic bag, A front sealed box with about $100 worth of tools, a few extra plugs, new chain, and other things i havnt figured out yet, The rear rack has an extension added on to it, some handmitten things for snow, and finally, some 26 inch Vampires on 12" ITP Chrome Steel rims. The tires are baaaaad. I also got a 14'x6.5' trailer with gate, rails, spare tire, lights, plate, and a box up front for helmets and stuff.

So far, I like it alot. I cant wait to bury the thing in some mud.

I know that i need to watch the chain, and the brake pads wear out quick, what else should i look for. Thanks alot.

Looks like i will be visiting the polaris forum a lot more.

Derek

I have the same yr,make, and model ATV.The 400cc engine has been bullet proof. The rest of MY ATV is a POS.

Check the steering for play. There should be NO play at all in your steering. If there is,its more than likely your steering stem bushing or outter tie rod ends,or BOTH.

Keep the chain WELL OILED/ADJUSTED at ALL times.

Keep an eye on the brake pads.

The front hubs?Keep an eye on the oil level in them. There is a little allen screw on the hub, remove this and turn the hub to 3 oclock. The oil should be filled to this level. My hub seals/sleeves have been replaced 3 times allready.

I wish you very good fortune with your new purchase,

Bill

derekpolaris,

The Xplorer 400 is a good bike........I bought Moose pads for the rear, and they didn't hold up much better than stock. For $100, you can buy a brake upgrade kit that includes 3 new rotors and new pads all the way around. It will cost you about the same to replace just the pads with severe duty ones, and for 2001, the pads are supposed to last 5 times as long as previous year models. May be worth looking into. Keep the thing well-greased with a high-quality grease. I'm not sure what causes some people to have seal problems, but I've personally not had problems with seals........on my 2 polaris machines. However, right after a friend bought the sp500 I had, one of the seals went out. I had always rinsed the back side of the strut housing.......where the cv-joint goes in at.......after I went mud riding. I believe that mud riding can allow mud and debris to get packed around the seal, and if allowed to dry.......it will most likely cause the seal to go bad. I am not saying that polaris machines are bullet proof........I believe MEANGREENMACHINE has had seal problems as well. Anyway, good luck with your purchase.
