'83 Kawasaki 200...anyone have one or heard of one??
#1
My buddy bought an '83 Kawi 200, its 4 or 5 speed with a clutch(havent seen it), and the fenders are black, no racks, and no suspension. From what I've heard its a piece of junk. He wants to get it running(engine needs some work like mostly cleaning).
I just want to know if anyone has one or has ever heard of these.
Thanks.

Oh,..I've heard of them alright. As matter of fact, I can remember to the days when they were still plentiful. Not to bash the machine, but they were VERY unreliable. Kawasaki stopped ordering parts for these machines about 5 years ago. The only parts you can get now are ones that Kawasaki still has on their shelves and the few parts that are available from the aftermarket. [which is pretty much just tires and cables]
There were 3 different versions of the KLT200. Please don't ask me to explain the differences, because I can't remember them. All had the manual clutch.

I used to have one back in '83. It ran ok and was really not a bad machine for what it was designed for. It was a utility bike, not a hard core rec bike. It weighed about 350lbs, had electric start, a lockable differential in the back( open diff for grass areas like golf courses and locked diff for farm /utility work), the fuel tank was under the seat and it would run all day on a tank. It had a manual clutch and a 5 sp trans. There was no suspension except the hard but bulletproof Goodyear tires. I used to take it out hunting pulling a 14ft trailer w/ 5 of my buddies on it. That was the only way we could all go at once. That trailer probably weighed a 1000lbs w/ everyone on it, but the KLT would pull 4th gear. The only problem was stopping in a hurry! The worst part of the bike was the chain adjustment. The stock tensioner was JUNK!! We used an aftermarket 2 roller style. That was the only way the chain would stay on. My advice, If you can get it running for $100 or less then do it, if not, oh well.

Its an '83 KLT 200, not sure if it's the Type A,B or C.
It has those Good Year tires on them, they look old, but still have good tread, He needs all new wiring on it, and the engine needs some work, maybe the tranny too, It wont even shift into another gear, I think he wasted his money, he bought it for $200(Canadian), He will just clean it up as good as he can and sell it for a bit more.

I have a klt200. It's pretty unique. No rear suspension. Gas tank in rear. Lockable rear diff, but it is chain drive. The motor seems runs awesome. It goes though rear hubs like crazy. They keep stripping out because the splines are so fine. I can't remember how many times the chain fell of the sprockets. I totally redid the chain tensioner system. I still have it, but I haven't run it in a long time.
