tires for speed, mud, and play
#1
I recently got a 650 and after reading about the poor stock tires that the prarie has, I am researching new tires. I want the ride that I have now with better mud traction, a little more ground clearance, and the tread that will allow me to have fun on fast winding trails. I dont want to kill my speed either. I already have gravity working against me, being 6'4" and 285lbs.
I have read all the tire posts that is on this site but some of the tires have no description on the tire pages. Any heads up is appreciated.
I also want to know what speed the other owners have gotten from their 650 machines when they were stock. I have gotten 61 mph on my speedometer. What can I do to get just a little more. Speed is addictive!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, LONGARM

Longarm650, Glad to see there are riders out there of the more, uh, mature size! I'm 6'1" and weigh just under 300lbs, so the 650 was a great choice. It has ample suspension and tons of power. My riding buddies are blown away when I wheelie this thing!! Anyways, at the present time, I have stock tires on my 650, but I am going to put on 26inch Bearclaws as soon as I can afford it. Like you, I want more grip, less roll in the corners, and a little more clearance. However, I still want all the power I currently have and I don't want to jet it or put on aftermarket pipes etc. A bunch of the guys I ride with have Bearclaws and they have had very good luck with them. A couple of other guys have 589 M/Ts on their machines and they are very impressive in the mud, but they are fairly heavy. There are lots of tires out there, and I don't think there is a bad choice to be made, as long as you pick the tire for your riding conditions. Bearclaws, Dirt Devils, Maxxis all-traks, 589s, it's all good.

I think Masterblaster gave some good tire options for tires that aren't only used in the mud.
I am really disappointed in the size options you get with these tires, since I want bigger tires, but I want to get sometires for dry trails.
-All traks don't have a big enough diameter
-Dirt devils and bear claws don't come in the widths I want
I don't want a 12" wide tire.
The only tire I have found is the mudbug, which comes in an 8" and 10" widths. Mudbugs are one of the lightest tires, and they are also inexpensive. But, I would prefer getting a little less agressive tread.
I wrote a letter to Maxxis complaining about the lack of sizes available on their Bighorn.
Longarm, if you want speed:
-K&N filter will give ya some more umph.
-Uni vents or holes in the airbox lid.
-A Procircuit pipe will give you more pep than the others, but HMF pipes are quieter and still increase hp.
-A set of cams from Mike Penland will make it leave other 650's in the dust. Don't ask me how to get them, search around the kawi forum a bit.
-you may have to disable the rev limiter if you put a cam in it, so you can go faster.
-Some people think you need to change the cvt pulley weights or springs if you modify the engine too much.
