I talked to Rick Ritter yesterday, and he said that he has heard good and bad about roller clutches, but he didn't elaborate. What would you guys/gals recommend? An AAEN roller clutch, or a clutch kit from RCR? Rick recommended HPD's pipe over his, but didn't say anything about the clutch. So I'm just looking for any info about either of them. Thanks,

Not only does a roller create less friction, it has different spring adjustments that you can set for more acceleration or more backshifting. I'm not sure why anyone would say anything bad about a roller unless they set it up wrong. Add a new front spring and weights with the roller and you'll get a nice boost in acceleration.

I can't even think of how there could be any negatives with the roller clutches. Perhaps the other companies are discrediting the product because they can't sell it due to pattents.

I have a roller clutch and couldn't be happier.

I just installed the roller clutch on my Sportsman 400. I did not like the fact that they expect you to machine the buttons for the helix to ride on. For the money, machined buttons should have been included. Besides that I love the setup and have already took it apart to add more pretention. I also got the blue spring.

Clutch kits are so misunderstood. The common clutch kit that is sold mearly constists of new primary, secondary springs, and possibly weights matched to your style of ridng and motor mods.

Whose ever "kit" you buy will only work better with the roller, which is also grossly misunderstood. The roller, whether Aaen's or HPD's, will only transfer the power from the crank to the transmission more efficeintly, reguardless of whose springs you are using. It inof itself will NOT add more HP to your ATV.

Meaning, you can use a "plain" Polaris primary, Hot Seat "black" secondary, HPD 54gm. weights, and an Aaen roller kit to acheive the desired effect you want. The above set up (just thrown together for illistration) should equal a medium engagement, high backshift, and quicker shift out. And, theoritcally when used with the roller will do all this more efficeintly.

Your primary should be chosen to have the engagement you desire, while matched to allow the motor to "rev out" exactly where it's power is made.

Of course if you make a mod to your CVT driven ATV that changes the motors power band, you also have to adjust the clutch accordingly. In most cases you'll just need a new primary spring. Most people dont understand the basics of CVT tuning, hell I barely do, and that is a big detourant in people choosing a Polaris ATV, and least the sportier ones, beacuse we all know they dont have a hi-performance ATV! But, thats another topic.

Still confused? I am to sometimes.

I don't have a roller clutch but I did install an RCR stage 1 over the holidays. I put on a lowend pipe, white primary clutch spring, and purple secondary which Rick threw in for free. He said the lowend pipe he was sending was one of his last and didn't look too good so he gave me the secondary clutch spring.

I couldn't get over the night & day difference between the stock Scrambler 400 and the stage 1 version. It really rips now and feels like a 4X4 version of my 350X. I decided to make my mods slowly a little at a time so I can judge each one for it's cost vs. kick in the butt feel. May be you should get your 500 a pipe and clutch springs first and evaluate the new performance. I would love to throw several $K into more hop ups but I'm not sure I would have a quad that would be good for anything other than racing. My next move is reeds and a carb, if that leaves me wanting more I'll look at the clutch again. Or may be a piston and porting, all these mods are a good part of the fun though, aren't they?

Thanks for all of the help. I think, for now, I'm just going to add a pipe and new springs (whatever Rick recommends for my style of ridding) and add the roller clutch later. Going to try to call and order from RCR tomorrow, if I can get out of bed in time before I have to leave for work!! LOL
Thanks again,
