After a good hard ride up Vermont,a week later, back home (CT) my machine is running like crap. I tried adjusting the carb cleaning the carb removed the pilot jet, blowing out with air and still no good. Checked the reeds air filter still nothing. Symtoms: will not idle unless idle screw is turned all the way in. Air screw can be 1/2 turn or 3 turns or even take it out, nothing changes.I cant detect any air leaks. Any suggestions? 2000 xplor 400 4x4 stock carb. Thanks for any input.

i felt bad that u had no replys cant help u with ur problem but i thought that maybe if somebody else saw that someone replyd they might take a glance

 

Double check the condition of your intake boot, the rubber between the carb and the reeds. Check your gaskets. Inspect your cylinder base gasket.

It should still idle with a blown gasket. I had a bad base gasket that was leaking bad and it idled just fine. Look hard at your reeds cause sometimes they get a hairline crack and it is hard to detect. Change your plug also and just start from scratch. Did you change anything when you went riding? Just to rule something else out do a compression test if you have a gauge. Keep us posted somebody ought to figure it out.

Check yor throttle cable also itcould have stretcheda little. If so you can adjust the idlewith the throttlecable.

Make sure you dont have any water in the spark plug cap.
want to RED RIVER TRAILS in Munster, TEXAS last weekend and every time I hit the water it ran like crap.
A new cap sloved my problem.Todd

 

Forgot! check and make sure the choke is'nt stuck in the carb.

Thanks for the input guys. I went through everything that was mentioned,Yes my v-force reeds were in pretty bad shape,but I dont think that was the problem. I replaced them with my stock until I get new peddals.Then I took the carb apart again blew it out with air took the float off,I think the float may have been sticking.I also put a new plug in and it ran fine. I took it up Vermont over the weekend with no problems accept the 4 wheel drive didnt engage when I needed it the most and for the rest of the day. Half way through the next day it started working again with no problems. Figure that out! One other ? Will a spark plug come back once its fouled? Or should you just throw it away?

 

Glad to hear you solved it. You can re-use fouled plugs. You can do the trail fix also, buy gently burning off the fuel with a lighter. One of the best ways to clean (thoroughly) is with an aviation style plug cleaner, it blasts them clean. A lot easier to use the lighter though....and a whole lot cheaper.

Ronnie, the reason I suggested the base gasket is because there was extra air getting in somewhere. Diagnosing things over the net, sometimes they'll idle with a bad gasket, sometimes they won't. Kinda throwing out general ideas, cause you never know what went bump in the night [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

By no means was I trying to say you were wrong. I just took it for granted that mine idled fine with a bad base gasket.Should have known better.
