Why are the gas tanks on the '03 Sp 500's smaller than previous years? On the Polaris website, it says that the Sportsman 500's tank size is 4.75 gallons instead of 5.25. Is this a mis-print or the real thing? I thought a lot of people liked the bigger gas tank on the Sp 500's. What's up with that?

i guess with the $400 MSRP price reduction they had to cut corners somewhere! LOL
i liked the larger tank on my old Sportsman.
don't know why Polaris changes a good thing.

I suppose it is one of those things that happen when they do a redesign.
Why they went with a SMALLER tank is beyond me, though. I don't like worrying if I need to re-fuel in the middle of nowhere.

umm actually i over looked that fact when at the dealer show, but my guess is that it has the pvt vented like the 700, where the snorkel goes up to the gas cap, wich requires a section to be made in the tank to fit the venting..

but hey,, no more water ingestion..

I agree with polarismech on this.
And if that is the case,
I want to put the new gas tank on my 01sp,
just so I can get the new snorkle for the belt,
it's about 8" higher
