Finally went through some deep stuff, what happened?

Well i was riding in PA and saw a mud hole. I decided to test my grizz for the first time to see what it could do. I started off good but about half way through it statred to skip. well i can't really explain it, it sounds like it is dying or something. i had it in low, with the locker on and it sounded terriblr. I have ordered a K&N air filter and am planning on doing the stock muffler modifacation. is that the problem or is it the spark plug? please help.

stock qrizz (like most other yamahas) has one of the worst air box set ups in the industry. i dont know if you saw this or not but in dirt wheels they said that in deep mud or water crossings when water or mud would splash the engine case and the steam would rise into the air box and i am sure u know what happens when u water down u'r fuel.....it just dusn't work. so really your problem is caused by where the air box is placed, you can either design an air box of your own or get one of those filter covers that lets air in and keeps water out....racers do this to get more air flow and with that fabric it allows you to take the air box right off (i dont know if it really works or not its just a suggestion) good luck

this is a simple solution. first, did you floor it? if so, then you hit the rev limiter. this is put on the griz to keep power down in locked diffs. this can be bypassed pritty easy. you can test this by going down a streight away with the diffs locked. floor it an at 22 mph you should start to sputte, and sound like its dying, thats the rev limiter.
if not, then take a drill bit, or better yet, a hole cutter, and cut some holes in your side panels. ( the black panels that remove flanking the engine) alot of people have done this mod, and it solves the steam issued we have dealt with. if you look at my sig, you will see the side panel mod i did, and it works super!!!
good luck.

I looked at the spedo and it said i was only going like 5 mph. with the air filter i ordered the outerwears cover. i am not sure if it is the water proof one. if not can i just spray it with scotch guard or something like that to make it water resistant?

i wouldn't spray it with scotchguard my self. it is water resistant. it wont keep out water if submerged, but splashing water it can handle.
i do have an ider for you though. next time you are at the mud hole, go through it with the side panels on, and see if it sputters. then go through it with them off, and see if it stops. if so, then the side panel mods will solve the problem.
af for the speedo, that means vary little if nothing at all. the cdi box is designed to sputter the engine if it exceeds 22 mph or the tourke exceeds the gas flow of 22 mph. most of us have thought this too, only to find out that it was the limiters all along. a simple bypass( and i mean simple) and some side panel mods fix almost all problems with the grizzly.
one other thing. the valves on the griz need adjusting alot!!!! every 20 hours or so, to keep it right( this will keep it from sputtering in the future)
and, if your going to add air with a k&n filter, and let more out with an exhaust mod, then you will need to rejet to keep it from running way too lean, and burning it up.
good luck
