no "4" on dash of rancher 4x4

my parents have a 2002 honda rancher es 4x4 nad this week end the number 4 wount show up all that it shows is a --. it shifts in fine and goes in to gear just fine. the display works good otherwise r-n-1-2-3-5 all work fine just not 4. i think it is a electral problem but dont know for sure. where is the plug for the tranie that tells the dash what gear it is in i think ill start there.

It's controlled by one switch. If the switch were faulty, it wouldn't work at all.
You have a blown bulb under the #4 lense.
The problem is that the ES models have a sealed instrument cluster that is not servicable. It's sold as one unit. Honda did this to make it waterproof.

???? no lenes' on the rancher its a digtial number on a lcd screen when it should show "4" it just shows two dashes"--". my parents other quad is a recon and it has the lights across the top of the bash but not the rancher. any other ideas?

It sounds like the shift position sensor needs to be adjusted, my foreman 450 does the same thing if you try to shift it when the motor is not running, because the gear does not fully engage and trip the sensor. Your transmision is fully engaging but the sensor does not detect it so it presents a -- on the LCD.
Your are correct cb2000 , it could not be a lens or bulb, the characters use the same LCD drivers and elements.
