I recently returned to the off-road scene after a 10 year break from DIRT activites. My previous experience was all on the two-wheeled variety. My main motivation for buying an ATV (Arctic Cat 500 Auto) was for hunting purposes, but I also enjoy very much trail riding, creek crossings & other daring adventures. My question is, "Do any of you other riders carry any type of insurance on your rides?". I've had PWCs for 6-7 years & strongly recommend at least liability on those, but my concern on the ATV is comprehension (sic). You know, theft, fire & the like. $6,000 is no small chunk of change to leave unprotected. If you do carry coverage, what do you pay for premiums? Thanks for your responses & I'm glad I found this forum to exchange ideas with fellow riders.

CatLance:
Hey, I felt the same way. We pay $340/yr. for 2-AC 500 Auto's from State Farm. $100 ded, covers everything from breakdowns to fire and theft. Might seem high to some, but at least it's covered, so if anything happens, it will be fixed or replaced.

General thinking on car insurance is that any vehicle worth less than $5,000 you should just carry liability on. That means your $6,000 ATV, which is worth less as soon as you ride it, should not be insured.
The Insurance Industry has us by the B###'s anyway. This is one area where we DON'T have to play their stupid games. Take care of your stuff.
Keep the insurance industry out of this or the next thing we'll have is mandatory (as soon as they smell money) insurance for any ATV that is financed. Silly Later, Fourlix

I talked to my State Farm agent yesterday. In order for the ATV to be included on my Personal Liability Umbrella policy, I have to carry $100,000/$300,000 on Liability (just like cars). The annual premium he quoted me is $201.20. Liability $28.80, Uninsured $7.60 and Comp/Collision $164.80 ($500 Deductible). Like I mentioned, my main concern was something happening to the ATV that was out of my control (garage burning down, truck wreck with ATV in back & theft). I am leaning toward no insurance and being very cautious (noone else rides the ATV and always chained & locked into the truck). The reason I sold my PWCs was the insurance cost ($600/yr) and I don't want to get into that trap again. Thanks for your comments. Lance

I do a lot of riding along roads, for this liability is a must. I also carry fire, theft, and collision.

My insurance runs much the same - about 200 per year, and I had same requirement for coverages to include my Arctic Cat on umbrella liability policy. I don't have option of not letting anyone ride but me, so I opted for the insurance.

By the way, what part of the state is Riverside, MO located in? I am in far western Kentucky.

AC454,
What kind of Deductible do you have with your policy? (he he)

KYParrothead,
Riverside is just North of Kansas City, If you watch the news today, it's right where the small tornados touched down last night--Wiped out a Toyota Dealership--Anyone want a good deal on a T1000? I heard it took the truck out of the showroom & put it on what's left of the roof.

Later, Lance
