Default broke 2001 500

I was out in the mud today with my son inl laws 2001 500 auto (twin to mine that was stolen). While stuck in a hole I tried to back out and all I heard was a grinding noise. sounded like gears meshing....... but this is an auto. Didn't feel like it was all the way in gear. So tried forward but could only get it to move if it was in low range and it was still grinding. Not too bad once I was moving (after I got towed out of the hole) But after it was being towed down the trail for awhile it seemed to get worse again. So we stopped and went to get the truck about 10 miles away.

Anyone with ideas as to what happend? I haven't tore it apart YET but may get at it on sunday.

Thanx for all your help (cause I know this is THE place for help.

did the sound come out of the front end or from the motor? kind of sounds like what mine did when the front differential went.

The sound came from the motor/tranny. Any ideas what I should be looking for when I open her up???
