650 Belt Light

650 Belt Light
I just purchased my 650 on saturday and went for a ride, ended up with 47 miles on it. I stoped on the trail for a break and when i started it back up the belt light was flashing and I could only go 10mph. This made the last few miles of the trip very long.
Has anyone else expierenced this with their 650 yet? I am going to give the dealer a call tomorrow morning to see if I can get it in to get reapired. (luckily I have a GREAT AC dealer) I will keep you posted on how it turns out.
The manual says that this light is suppposed to come on every 100 miles I sure hope that it does not retard the engine every time, that could cause some dangerous situations exspecially in some of the places we get into on the quads.
Besides this seamingly annoying situatuation I was extreamally impressed with the overall performance of the machine, not even comparable to my 375.
thanks

650 Belt Light
Hi, you may want to recheck your manual (page 77).. The light is supposed to come on every 100 hours, and not miles thankfully. I have 300 miles and a little over 30 hours on mine with no belt light warnings, or any problems for that matter. I guess the avg rider would put 1000 miles on at 100 hours and they want the Cat checked at service - maybe for belt condition. Sounds like your worn/loose belt sensor somehow got tripped and the engine is limiting (self protection). Or they have a software bug that set off the warning light. The dealer can go through the bike diagnostics & reset it, thats probably the only way. They probably will check your belt as well to see if it indeed had too much play and slapped the sensor. maybe it was set loose from factory by mistake. Hope you get it fixed quick.
Where in MI are you located?

I have not had any problems with mine however when i purchased it I asked the dealer about the light. The dealer had to get the info from Arctic Cat so it took a couple of days. My dealer faxed me the Arctic Cat Tech info on the light and it states in sum and substance that the light will light and stay lit at 100 Hours of operation to indicate a service interval. This will not effect the operation of the machine. A blinking light indicates excessive belt wear or failure and will put the machine into a reduced power mode. AC calls it a limp home mode. The tech info outlines the procedure for reseting the light. It is somewhat lengthly and requires a jumper wire that AC provides. Ask your dealer for copies of the tech info.

thanks guys for the info, You are right it is 100 hrs, I was a little frantic when i read it. "my baby was sick " if they call it a limp home mode I think they are exagerating a little, I had a few hills to go up and thankfully my father was with me with my trusty 375 to help it hoble up. I am heading out to load it up for the dealer now and hopefully i will be out riding it again buy the weekend.

Do a search for a forum member called Nyroc. Look on his website for information on the belt tripping sensor and how to reset it. The cat may have different wires though. The Praires seem to come on the loose end of the spec for belt tension, I'm guessing its the same for you with your cat. Remove a shim from the rear clutch and install a black spring and you will never have this problem again.

Well I got it back today seemed to be shimmed improperly from the factory which caused the light to go on prematurlly. It actually seems to connect a little better know.
To reset the light sensor you need a jumper harness, I will check into it more next time I see the dealer. Thanks for all of the suggestions, there is always someone out there with a good ideal or the knowledge to help out.

Corey,
Is there any chance you can send me a copy of the Tech Sheet the dealer faxed to you on resetting the belt light? My dealer is closed until January 2nd for his year end inventory.
I tripped the belt wear sensor while I was attempting to hook up a backup light. Don't ever unplug the sensor connector while the ignition is on; this sets the blinking belt light and puts it in the "limp home" mode!
Any one else out there have a copy of the proceedure? I'll order my manual as soon as the dealer reopens.
Thanks.

Bob here it is but it is a bit lengthly and states the following: Skip # 3 in belt failure to verify that the toggle switch has actually been tripped. This will save time by not removing the belt cover if the light was triggered from some other source other than the belt. Such as a power surge. If the light does not reset then start over with full sequence.
-If the belt light is "FLASHING" the drive belt failure system has been activated. In this mode the CDI will have a lower rev limiter (limp home mode) The reset procedure is:
1. turn key off
2. Disconnect belt failure switch (two wire connector)
3. Remove belt cover and inspect belt, replace if necessary and make sure toggle switch is in "on" position
4. Reinstall belt cover and leave failure switch unplugged
5. Disconnect the 4 wire belt reset connectors
6. Use the jumper part#0486-144 and connect this to the mating 4 wire connector (Temporarily jumper the grey/green and orange /green until the jumper becomes available)
7. Turn key on and watch belt light it will flash for 10 seconds and then will return to a slow flash MUST WAIT FOR SLOW FLASH!
8. Turn key off
9. Reconnect all connectors to thier proper mating connector
10. Turn key on, belt light should no longer be flashing
If Belt light stays ON (not flashing) the 100 hour service interval is due no rev limiter The reset procedure is
Steps 1-3 same as above
4. Reinstall the belt cover and connect the belt failure switch back to its mating connector
Steps 5-6 same as above
7. Turn key on
8. Disconnect the belt failure switch (two wire connector)
9. Belt light should be flashing let flash for 10 seconds
10. Turn key off
11. Reconnect all connectors to thier proper mating connector
12. Turn key on, belt light should no longer be on or flashing.
These procedures must be followed to the letter for the CDI to work.
Well as you can see it is a little long. This came right from my dealer trust me Iam not that smart! Anyway for a machine of this caliber with all the high tech options that it has one would think reseting this light would be a little less complicated. Mine has been great no problems and a blast to ride.

650 Belt Light
Corey,
Thanks for taking the time and effort to post this complete procedure. I really appreciate it! Your efforts have helped all other 650AC owners that will encounter the same problem. They can also use an Internet search engine with the phrase "Arctic Cat 650 belt light" and be directed right here. This makes up for what I believe is a shortcoming in the documentation provided by Arctic Cat with a new machine. I feel they should have included this reset procedure in the owners manual because it is a maintenance procedure that every user will encounter.
Otherwise, this has been a fantastic ride for me and the family. I'm really surprised with the ride, power, traction and handling. I hope you're getting in some wild riding with all the snow, and some rain, you guys have been getting. Enjoy and ride safe.
One other item I would like to share with fellow 650 AC owners; increase your front tire air pressure to 8 psi. The recommended 5 psi is not enough for this heavy machine. This greatly improves response, makes it take higher speed turns much better, and lightens steering effort. This is because the front tires have a much smaller contact area than it does on the rear, so it supports less weight with the same air pressure. When I was breaking it in, the front tires were folding over in turns and the rim would contact the ground. With the increased air pressure, it fixes the problem and rides so much better.
Thanks again for the effort to post this for all of us,
Happy Holidays!
