Default 2003 400 auto problem

my buddy is having a problem with his quad. when he gives it has it hesitates to take off. the motor sounds fine but the belt seems like it slips. no water in the housing and he put a new belt on. the dealer said that he thinks it is sand that worked its way into the clutch? i have never heard of this he said that the sand makes the belt slip? anyone ever had this problem or heard of sand causing belt slipping problems?

Sand???
That is a new one.

Is it actually slipping?

Or is it just a clutch shift problem. I know my 500 auto will sometimes bark or chirp if I throttle before the clutch sheaves have a chance to back-shift. It is a little annoying but it really is no big deal. Sounds worse than it is. I redrilled my clutch spring to add a little pre-load to the sheaves which helped to back-shift quicker.
