I have had a problem with my speedometer lately as well. When it finally broke it did two things. First it twisted off the driven end of the speedometer cable (the end closest to the motor). Which was fixed by replacing the speedometer cable and fixed the wacked out speedometer.
A few days later the speedometer drive gear seized up and sheared off the connecting dogs on the end of the shaft from the transmission that turns the speedomter drive gear. Now it doesn't work at all. When I was cleaning it up. I discovered that the seals on the speedometer gear housing leaked and that allowed water to get into the grease. Which rusted the gear, caused it to seize. I am not sure if the two are connected or not.
Anyway, if you follow the speedometer cable down to where it connects to the engine you will find a place to unscrew the cable from the speedometer gear housing. Unscrew the speedometer cable and check the end of the cable to see if it is still turns the speedometer. I used a screw driver and turned it.
At the same time you might want to take the two bolts off the speedometer gear housing and take a close look at the speedometer drive gears. Just to be safe.
I am not sure about the plug on light thing. Since the plugs don't match maybe you have one for the wrong year model?
Hope this helps.

I unscrewed the bolt and everything was ok, it had no problem turning no oil leak smooth turning bearing almost like it was new but the speedometer now won't past 30 mph. i know i'm going faster because I been clocked going 55mph. but still reads 30.
