Man sorry to hear about that already. It has obviously tripped the switch in the cover. That will only happen when the belt fails or it gets WAY to much deflection. At least you are under warranty now I just hope that your dealer is competent.I will tell you that not everyone has had that problem.I was over 700 miles on my belt and then I only needed to adjust it.It still looked good.I ride with other 02 and 03's and they are creeping up on 1k miles on the orig belt.If you decide to do this yourself there is plenty of help and it really is easy.
Good Luck

It is believed to be a power surge of some kind that is causing it to trip the switch. AC has not yet found the cause, but my dealer told me today that it can be reset with a paper clip. He's going to show me how to do it the next time I take mine in for service. Mine has not had the problem, but I want to know how to reset it if it ever does. I've got 200 miles now with no trouble.

My dealer also sells Kawasaki and they have occasionally seen the same problem with the Prairie, although he said Kawasaki tells them its not wide-spread.

my belt went at 49 miles but my dealer had sold me a reset switch and the last time i was out the belt went again and it only took minutes to reset it and then on my way again. cat knows they have a problem as this is caused by a voltage spike that affects the belt sensor and trips it into limp mode thus you need the reset switch, they are supposed to have a fix within the month and that was a couple of weeks ago that i was told all this by my dealer who phoned cat my belt only went twice in 179 miles other than that an awsome bike

Sounds like AC uses their on wiring harness. The Kaw reset is only when the switch has been physically tripped.Resetting it involves switching plugs and cycling the key....not a paper clip
Hey Dan W.....I am in Indy and ride with several guys from Brownsburg.

your belt got to hot and tripped the censor..... therefore you should have gotten a 'by-pass' from your dealer when you bought it ----- what it is, is a thing that you plug into a few wires and it resets your computer. your belt really isnt 'dead' and just to let you know a new belt is 146.00 .. at my local dealership anyways.

yes there is a way. to do it w/o taking it back to your dealer.... I did it over the phone w/ my dealer because i didn't feel like waiting around for them to get my bypass.... So what i did was call them up, and my dealer told me to take the belt cover off and then theres like a few wires *certain colors* that you have to unplugg and connect a wire to them and then turn the key on or something. i cant remember .... but i did it with just regular wire -- - call your dealer - and try to do it over the phone. .... OR go and get the bypass... your dealer should already have it because they are handing them out w/ the quads now. And with the bypass it's as easy as a trailside fix.

Here is the sequence to reset the belt failure light.
I would suggest that you have the dealer do item #3 in the sequence
to verify that the toggle switch has actually been tripped, or by another
source, such as a power surge.
THIS IS GOOD TO KNOW WHEN YOUR 2hr. FROM HOME TRYING TO RIDE !

1. Turn key off.
2. Disconnect belt failure switch (two wire connector).
3. Remove belt cover & inspect belt, replace if necessary, and make sure toggle
switch is in the "on" position.
4. Reinstall the belt cover & leave belt failure switch unplugged.
5. Disconnect the 4 wire belt reset connectors.
6. Use the Jumper part #0488-144 and connect this to the mating 4 wire connector.
(Temporary jumper the gray/green and orange/green wires).
7. Turn key on & watch belt light, it will flash fast for 10 seconds and then will
return to a slow flash. (MUST WAIT FOR SLOW FLASH!)
8. Turn key off.
9. Reconnect all connectors to their proper mating connector.
10. Belt light should no longer be flashing.
