Default 96 bearcat 454 4x4 carb problem

Hello, I just purchased a 96 bearcat 454 4x4 and am having problems getting it running. the atv has not been cranked in about 2 years. I removed the carb and drained the old gas from the tank. I cleaned the carb and jets with carb cleaner. after putting everthing back together the atv runs very sluggish. it feels like it is not getting enough air to the engine. i think i may need a new diaphram or i still have a jet clogged.

thanks in advance.

JS

When you cleaned the carb, did you unscrew the jets, (remove them) and clean it that way?

Check wear on jet needle and jet tube, if worn it will load up on idle but should run ok on top end.

Check the fuel flow from the tank. Be sure you have a full flow in the "on" position and the "reserve" position. The valve may be partly plugged, limiting the amount of fuel to the carb.

air and fuel problems were nightmares on the 454's. All of these guys are talking about important points that could be your problem.

thanks for all the replies. When i cleaned the carb i removed the one jet that is right under the float i did not remove any others.

It runs good on idle but just seems like it will not open up.

Drained the tank in the "On" position and the "Reserve" postiion,. It seems like a good flow from the tank.

I am leaning towards replacing the diaphram on the carb. can anyone back me up or stear me in a better direction? the cheapest i found the diaphram is 80$.

also i was thinking of replacing this carb on this atv. anyone know of a carb that runs good on this machine, i have read alot of posts about the carb on the 96 and 97's being crap. I didnt know if there was a replacment model that fixes the issues.

thanks again

A worn or torn diaphram will cause the symptoms you have. Make sure its bad, before you toss it, and unfortuntly, as you have found, they are pricey. A good looking over will tell you if its shot or not.

yeah, it is pricey. My uncle replaced the carb on his 98 and it was over $300 for it (plus for some reason they had the dealer install it instead of just letting me do it for free). Made a big difference, but their carb was crap. Mud got inside it and the diaphram was shot. Scratches all down the side. Runs good now, but all of their problems over the years have all been from the carb.
