CV Boot replacement help
Hey CV
You seem to have an understanding for Cv joints. I've never understood how a CV joint differs from a universal joint. I understand that a universal joints rpms change from the input to the output dependant on angle but I don't know how the CV joint compensates for this . Can you explain?

CV Boot replacement help
It's a matter of geometry. The cv joint a/k/a constant velocity joint displaces the energy or force through 6 contact points versus 4 on a u-joint. The design allows for the force to be divided equally at all angles thus offering more flexibility and operating angles than a u-joint. I'm not an engineer by any means but this seems to be the main reason for the use in place of a u-joint. But this is my theory and I'm sticking with it. There are several articals about this topic on the web if you do a search you can find all kinds of details. Let me know if I can be of any help.
Thanks,
Danny

CV Boot replacement help
Yes, it sounds like you have the typical symptoms of a bad outer cv joint. These are usually worse on the four wheel drives since most people don't know until they kick it into 4 wheel. However, I do have those listed. I think they may use u-joints or a solid axle which would blow that theory out of the water. Take a look behind the front wheel and see if you have a cv boot there. Let me know what you find. You can email me at thecvman@comcast.net or call 1-800-338-2326 M-Sat. 8-6 e.s.t..

CV Boot replacement help
Hey a "10" Thanks,
I haven't had a lot of experience with the guards. But I do have some factors to consider. I would stay away from guards that don't drain and act like cup for collecting mud and debris. These tend to rub that mess against the boot (not good). I have heard of some that wrap around the boot and are made of kevlar (the material bullet proof vest are made out of). I'm not sure about these I've just heard some people talking so I can't give you the hoe down. But these sound interesting to me. Maybe if you check around you can find out for the rest of us. Let me know.
Thanks,
Danny
