Default 01 250 problems

Hi.My GF is using my boss's 01 250 4x4 for a trip we care going on.I have charged the battery, new spark plug, oil change and an airfilter. It starts alright, not as good as it should. The problems are the idle isnt consistent, like I cna set it good but after it sits for a while and I run it again the idle needs adjustments again.I know the gas isnt too new so I am thinking a drain and refill is next.Could the carb be clogged or out of adjustment? The throttle also sticks open and that requires it be shut down or the idle kicked back down. Also the brake lever doesnt return back out, once pulled in it doesnt release itself and the lever has to be pushed back out.Any help with this stuff would be great.thanks in advance.Nitsy

Could be the throttle linkage is set wrong and not letting the throttle valve close properly everytime. Adjust the cable so there is about 1/8" of movement of the lever before the throotle plate moves. The brake sounds like it may have gotten moisture in the master cylinder or dirt and is causing it to stick. Mine was doing that, pulled it the master cylinder and dumped the fluid and cleaned it with Brake Clean, including pumping a bunch of it thru the cylinder, then bled the brakes. Works fine now. Next problem I will totally rebuild it and flush the system and install new fluid.

I did adjust the throttle lever and it has the 1/8 of play but I will doulbe check that.I know when I got my yfz450 it did it because there was some crap in the bowl causing the same problem,it was drained and it hasnt done it since.I did drain the fuel bowl but maybe I will have to get into the carb and do some cleaning. Thanks Nitsy Oh is there a spring in the brake lever?Does the fluid move the lver back into the original position? Thanks again

If there is a spring (there usually is) it is inside the unit and a non-servicable item. Dirt and old fluid can cause all kinds of strange problems and a 2001 rig is old enough to need a flush and fluid change under the heading of preventive maintenance. The owners manual says to change the brake fluid every 2 years, I would bet it never has been changed. Does the throttle feel stiff or sticky? You may be right about pulling the carb. I had to pull mine soon after I got it for idle problems. Pulled the bowl and flushed all the passages and cleaned what was easy to get to and after replacing the missing peice on the slide needle it has been flawless for over a year. About the hard starting. Choke on and DO NOT touch the throttle at all on cold start or you get all kinds of hard starting problems. Hot start usually needs some throttle, cold start no.
