Default 400I Cylinder ?

Just tore down my 05 400i FIS. I checked the cylinder with inside mic and it seems to have a taper in it. I checked it at the bottom of the cylinder and it seems to have a taper a couple microns in about 40mm length. Does this sound correct ?

Unless you ride full time for a living, I don't see how you can possibly have enough miles to require a teardown, unless you did a major no-no. The book says taper should be a max of .05mm or .002" max. The difference between the top and the bottom diameter. I generally check from the top of the ring wear to the bottom of the ring wear first and then from the top of the ring wear to the bottom of the jug. One lungers get a lot of piston slap.

I wish I rode for a living. I have around 1500 miles on it, we have alot of sand in the mud on the mountain I live and ride on. That stuff makes a great lapping compound Sucked a bunch of it through my carbarator, ate the rings up. Thanks, I'm well within the 50 microns then.

Another question for ya Bear. I just tore down a 04 400 Cat for a friend. He just bought it a couple weeks ago. It was smoking pretty bad. When I got the cylinder off it was scratched pretty good, a 50 over bore should take care of it. Anyway.....to the point........ I took the cylinder to the local Arctic Cat dealer, he told me that the 04 and 05 cylinders where nickel <SP?> plated, is this so ? I took the cylinder to a Honda dealer that I use alot, they said they would order the piston and rings and bore it for me.

Not if it is really a nikelsil bore they won't. They are to damned hard to bore. Dealt with these thing in outboards and a sleeve was the only cure for a tore up bore. Or in this case a jug.

According to the part numbers all the 376cc 400s use the same jug, so if the 05 isn't none are. Then it sounds like his AC dealer wanted the big money for the new jug, instead of doing the right thing and boring his cylinder.
