Default 4 wheel drive not working

I have a 2004 400. I was pushing snow and switched from 4 wheel to 2 wheel to turn around and all of a sudden it won't switch back into 4wheel. Has anyone else had this happen?

I plow with a 500auto and every once in a while it hangs up in 4WD. I have not checked into it. My 400auto has been good so far.

It is your switch, they were not sealed very good and if water gets in there they go bad fast. Easy way to test it, turn your key on, but don't start the ATV. Then flip the switch, if it is working you will hear it go from 4x4 to 2x4, and visa-versa. If you don't hear that noise, it is 100% you switch. They are pretty cheap too, so don't worry about it. Good luck.

i have an 03 that is stuck in 4wd. the 03s had the lever that you pull not the switch. luckily in is stuck in 4wd not 2wd. do you think that the transfer case so to speak would freeze up? my seal went out last year and while i did have it replaced i have doubts if it was replaced correctly. i did a lot od water riding since then. do you think water could get in there and freeze it tight? that is all i can come up with because it worked fine a few weeks ago when it was warm out?

luvthemud, i had a 99 300 do that all the time. it was ice on the transfer case so i couldnt engage or disengage. once it thawed it worked fine. ive got an 02 500 now but ive never had any problems. one thing you can do or try,is spray the linkage with some oil so water wont stick to it and freeze before you go out riding in the water.
