It ain't.

Both are limited slip differentials of similar function, if not similar construction, I think, "reviews" and advertising hype to the contrary.

The limited slip on the cat may not be a whole lot better, but it is better. As for the construction they are completely different.

I have a brother that has a 2000 model 500 Cat, his next door neighbor has a 2000 model Honda 450ES. They tied both to a tree on flat ground, the Cat made 4 even holes with all 4 tires spinning. The Honda made three holes with only three wheels spinning. They tried it again tieing both of them to a truck different type of ground but level, same results as the tree. There must be some kind of difference. The Cat had 27x12x12 Vamps all the way around, and the Honda had 27x12x9.5 Vamps in front and 27x12x12 Vamps in the rear.

This is what I found in the Tech Connection.

Name: David Roccaforte
Email: dave_roccaforte@asl-tk.com

I'm going to use a front limited-slip differential for the rear drive of a 70-hp, 30-lb./ft. rear-wheel-drive car, approximately 500 lbs. What ATV diff offers the largest amount of torque transfer? Most I've seen are around 30%. Would you recommend a cone or friction setup?

Yes, this is another one of those design competition questions. I would really appreciate your input. Just so you know that I read previous questions, I am going to try and locate the April '98 copy of DIRT WHEELS.

ATV: Arctic Cat Bearcat 454 4x4

David,

The all-metal "ratcheting cone" as used in the Suzuki 500 and the Arctic Cats is superior to the wet multi-plate setup, 50% vs. 30% "torque bias."

BTW-- The all Yamamha, All Kawasaki, and Honda 4wds (except the Rancher and Rubicon) use the Multi-plate setup.
