1996 454 top end problems
#1
I have only 1700 miles. It tops out around 30mph. not good. Idles fine. Plenty of (Revs) RPMS in nuetral. But when I go thru the gears the engine doesn't wish to max out. Very dogish. I heard they had problems with the carburetor. Can anyone please help.

Well my friend it could be a dozen different things.
Probably the best thing to do is to start with the things that don't cost anything or very little and go from there.
To get power you need the correct mixture of air, fuel, and spark/timing, and also compression.
Make sure your air ways are clean (filter etc), spray in some carb cleaner and put some in your fuel.
Make sure you have good fuel and not old stuff.
Make sure you have a good spark plug with the correct gap - incorrect gap can cause the timing to be off.
Make sure your battery is in good condition. ATV's use a magneto and sometimes needs the battery to help at top end.
Clean and make sure the jetting and mixture setting are set correctly in your carb and the choke is free and working correctly.
If you can't do this then have the shop do it but get your valves adjusted, and get the ignition timing set correctly.
Check for loose cables expecially with relationship to ground and battery connections.
If none of the above work then we can supply you with another laundry list.
Good luck

thanx for the info pertaining to the apparent problem. I have poured old gas out of tank dryed and put new gas in it. New spark plug but will have to check gap. My battery needs to be changed. But had the same problem last year when battery was good. Jetting and mixture setting needs to be checked because some guy was trying to fix it and most likely tinkered with them. I have never had the valves adjusted or the ignition timing set again. All I now is the thing idles nicely but can't get out of its way. Thanx for your cooperation.
P.S. Concerning the laundry list of things to do what kind of detergent would you suggest, I'm thinking patience.(HAH)

your needle jet needs to be replaced. It is most likely worn and is letting way more gas into the cycylinder that you need which is loading the plug and ******* it out. I had mine to the dealer twice with no results or change. I bought a new needle jet from alpha sports for like $29 and replaced the old one and once I looked at the new one , it was so obvious that the original was completly worn out and had way to much clearance on the needle. Since the installation of that one part it is running better than it has in 4 years. Hope this helps. I got on to this site to try to find out what I needed to do to get my 96 bearcat working again and thru some reasearch on some threads, this is what I found I needed to do to fix the problem.

To farmerTerry,
You would of all people would find a needle (jet) in the hay stack. All I can say is that New York wishes to thank you and the rest of the west coast. I'll apply your advice within a week an a half and and give you the low down. It won't take me long to replace, I just have some other chores I need to tend too. How many miles on yours when you started to have the same problem? Talk to you later, until then bye.
