Default cuts off on hills

my buddy has a '98 ac 300 4x4. it runs good on the trails and such but when he goes up hills it'll die or start sputtering real bad. if he rolls it back down to level before it dies it'll smooth out. haven't had a chance to check out the carb yet. could it be the float level or maybe something clogged up? what should I look for? as for setting the idle and such, what are the stock settings? its all stock except for a k&n. thanks

I think you are already on the right track looking at the floats.

I'm not sure what 'idle setting' you are looking for, I just turn it until it runs nice.

try draining your carb.
small screw at the bottom of carb, should have a rubber hose as a drain tube.
sounds like watter in gas to me .
