Broken Speedo Gear - '06 TRV
#1
The speedo on my 500 TRV quit working. Turns out the cable is driven from the end of a main shaft on in the transmission. Two little tabs on the end of the shaft engage a gear that drives the speedo cable. The tabs on the shaft are broken OFF. This machine has 800miles on it. The speedo cable etc run free - cant see any reason the tabs would have broken.
? Is this a common problem linked to a mfg defect ?
? I suppose the only way to repair is to tear down the tranny and replace the shaft -- do you know an easier solution ?
Any ideas appreciated ! !
thanks

CurtG,
I had the same thing happen to my wifes 03 TRV. Happened around 700 miles too. When I investigated it it looked to me like not enough oil made it to the speedo gear housing to lube the gear shaft. Then the speedo gear heats up and freezes up and the tip of the gear in tranny snaps off.
I cleaned out all the metal shavings and changed the oil 2 times and installed an hour meter for maintenance purposes. I have never fixed it. We have nearly 7000 miles (close to 200hrs)on it now as it is ridden as much as my 400 and it has close to 9000miles.
To replace the gear the engine has to be removed from the machine and have the entire head removed and then have the lower case split open, the counter shaft removed and replaced and then reassemble everything. I bought the parts to do it and AC gave me the counter shaft as I was 2 months outside my warranty but I have never had it fixed as it works fine with out it. I don't really care how fast I am going just how many miles I have gone.
If you still have a warranty call AC if not call them anyway and they may work something out with you.
