Buying an 06 650 v2 in a couple days..
#1
After much research on all brands I've decided to spend my $$ on a Cat. Found an 06 650 v2 with about 200 miles for 5k, sound like a fair deal? I've read about belt problems with the v2, is this a concern on the 06? Anything else to watch out for? Can someone explain the difference in gearing between the 04/05 and the 06's and why I've seen it recommended to drive in low gear if you're staying under 40 mph. How are the stock tires, the mtr's? I'm new to the whole atv world so any other info you'd like to throw in is appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome, the v2 is a good engine. YOu can get a module for it that will increase you power. In 2006 they put 4:10 gear ratio in there, it helps it a lot, however you should still use low unless you plan to ride 50+. Stock tires suck. You should be good to go though, good luck!

This atv has a moose module on already, I believe the only mod on the quad. What is the performance difference with the lower gears on the 06? A little quicker off the line and extra grunt when pulling heavy loads at slow speeds? Any effect at middle speeds and above?

The 06 V2 is a monster. I love it! My recommendations are as follows:
Change ALL fluids to Amsoil, or another high end synthetic oil. This includes engine, differentials, and if you want to go the extra mile, do the coolant as well.
Get a Dynatek CDI, you will LOVE the power increase, and its a plug in mod that is a 5 minute job.
Get aftermarket tires. This is pretty much a rule of thumb with almost every brand of ATV. Decide on what type of riding you will do most, and base it from there. I ride in EVERYTHING so i got the best all terrain tire i could find. (IMO)
Drive in low as much as possible. You will find out when you ride it on trails and such, low is all you need. Its weird feeling, as you have plenty of pulling power at low end, and it quickly accelerates through the mid range very well with no lack in the power department. I ride in low 95% of the time. Ive been in high only on gravel roads where i need to cruise at speeds higher than 40.
Have fun!!

Lots of explanations here about the difference in gearing, but no real mention of "why" to drive in low. The difference is the way the belt engages, in low it is a very crisp engagement. There is a greatly reduced risk of smoking the belt when under stress. Working the machine hard, or mudding in high gear puts a lot more stress on the belt. It isn't much of an issue in the 06, as the engagement seemed to be much better from the factory, but the 04-05's definitely need to be driven in low most of the time.

Saw an 06 V2 650 today at a dealership with 40 miles on it. They wanted $5725 for it. I guess just something that never had sold (because they are HIGH AS A CATS BACK at this dealership). I dont really need a new ride, but it sure made me wish I did.

I still think my v2 is sexy...no serious, it is an awesome machine. When it comes time to trade it is going to be hard to replace if I go with a cat. I will want a twin but no need for a 950 twin...blah

My thoughts exactly, guess I'll be keeping my 650 for a while.
