Default 2004 650 v2 starter problem

Hi-I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. My 2004 650 v2 battery has died a couple of times, but always seems to come back after a charge.I had to charge it last time I used it 4 weeks ago. After I drove it a while it would start no problem. It got below zero last night so I thought I should run my quad to keep the battery charged up. When I tried to start it, all I heard was a grinding sound but the starter never engaged. I then tried the pull starter for the first time, and was amazed how easy it started being that cold. I rode around in the snow for about 30 minutes, came home and thought well lets see if it starts now, because the battery must be charged up now. Same thing-just a grinding sound. Battery seems fine by lights & fans working right. Now I think somethings wrong with my starter or solenoid. What should I try now? I was thinking of banging my starter with a hammer. Any other ideas? Hate to think what a dealer is going to charge me. -Thanks

sounds like the battery may have a dead cell, has enough power to run the lights and fan but not enough to crank, i would try a new battery
