You are going to have to pull the rear end, drive shaft and take the transmission cassette out. Take about 2 hours with simple hand tools.
Before you do that make sure the shifter is attached to the shaft and is moving the shift shaft.

Best bet is to buy a down loadable manual from midwestern manuals. You start by boning up on it and looking at your ATV.

well i got it fixed there was a broken gear on the output shaft it also broke part of the case .you half to split the engine but it wasn;t to bad just need to keep tapping on the shaft when you pull it apart so everything doesn;t fall out.i got a used bottom end from a guy and swaped it out a had a noise coming from the transmission took it apart again and discovered the bearing on the output shaft needed to be replaced i guess thats what was wrong with the bottom end i bought

Did you do it with or without a manual?
Getting the drive shaft back into its housing with the spring. I just put grease into the socket and the spring into the grease. The rear end as a unit is heavy, for me it is, I used tie downs to support it to the ATV frame while aligning the drive shaft to the output shaft and installing the swing arm pins.

I had arctic cat manual i pulled the engine and split it on the floor. I looked at your pics of your 250 there not the same you have to split the engine up the center to get at the transmission on the 500. P.S the arctic cat manual is not that great doesn;t give enough details

The AC manual is pretty lame. On the 250 they have you trying to disassemble the tranny as it sits in the "fixed" half.
This is the half that is part of the engine. The tranny is a "cassette" type and there is no way you can disassemble and reassemble the unit as it is written in the book. The biggest issue I have is placement of the thrush washers. I used a online mirco filtch to get the correct placement. So far I have had the tranny in and out of the cassete 10 times to figure out how to reassemble it and in and out of the fixed half 8 times as I can not get nuetral to work. I get forward and reverse. I may have a thrush washer in the wrong position. The last time before I called it a day I could not get it to go into gear. I get to take it back apart and try some thing else. So the tranny comes apart again, Relocate a thrush washer. BTW the micro filtch is not that good either.

Good luck I think the thrush washers are defferant thickness this may be your problem did you keep them in the same order they came off?

The I.D. are different. Between the time I pulled it apart and the time I started putting it back together, I slept many times.
