2003 400 auto starter problem I replaced the flywheel and stater on my 4 wheeler and seemed to go well but the starter will only crank when I loosen the side cover .I checked and the washers are in rite I did use gasket maker instead of a gasket could the thickness of a gasket make that much difference?

I know tolerances can be very close, so it would be worth it to try the AC factory gasket. Did you torque the flywheel nut down to factory specs? If it turns over, when you loosen the cover fasteners, must be only a wee bit. You have a repair manual, right? Maybe got something spaced out wrong?

 

yes I torque the flywheel nut down .I picked up a factory gasket today I will try it tomorrow .it does start great when you use the pull cord.

 

I replaced with factory gasket and it's turning over great tolerance must be very small.
