Heated Grips Not Working Properly - Stumped!
#1
Very strange behavior with my heated grips. While testing them with the engine off (they are direct connect to new battery with charger running) in my garage the grips work fine.
I went for a ride and they didn't work at all. I thought they were just slow to get working but after 30 min ride nothing? Got back to the garage tested again with engine off and they worked fine?
Checked the charging system with engine running and its fine?

Even though the charging system is working, it may not produce enough power to operate the grips. Heating elements take a lot of power to get hot. Years back a friend installed a set, they worked ok as long as nothing else was on. The second the lights were turned on the grips stopped heating and soon a fuse blew out.

Thanks for everyone responses, the bike came this way with the grips wired directly to the battery, I would have never done this had I did the install and will change it eventually. Just to add to my previous information I have a 2-up seat with heated grips (direct wire as well), they work awesome. Yes I made sure during my tests that they both were not running at the same time to rule out excessive draw causing the issues. Also I did the tests after installing a new battery (24 AH/ 350 CCA). I'm wondering is the heating elements are starting to go, do they burn out and if so and they replaceable?
Thanks again
Thanks again

if they are running with machine off and then stop when the machine is running its a voltage supply issue. their is not enough power left for the grips once everything else on the bike takes its power.. I would also take the 1/2 hour and rewire both sets of grips to the accessories plug under the front and rear of bike. This way things are shut off when the bike is off its only a matter of time before one or the other gets left on and kills your new battery. Have you tested at the switch for your grips for power? its probably about the same price to replace the element as it is to replace the whole system.
