Buying 2001 250 4x4,any opinions?,(good or bad opinions welcome).

I bought my son A 250 4x4, and I think it is A great bike. The only bad thing that can be said of it is that the rear cv boots seem to be vulnerable to getting tears in them, they seem to catch a lot of sticks. So I highly recomend getting the cv boot protecters when you get the bike. I also like the 2-4 wheel drive shift lever with some adjustment you can lock the front end. These 2 acc. will cost less than $100 and will make it alot better. If you dont ride in mud and rough terain you won't need the shift lever. I think it is an excellent bike though you can't beat it, and with the price it is even more of A deal.

All in all,
It's a great atv. I bought mine back in October of last year and have since put 50 something hours on it. Mostly use it around the farm and some trail riding. Tore one inner rear CV boot and when I replaced it I put on the rear metal AC brand guards, no problems since. Boot kit was $25 and the guards were $28 at the AC dealer. One hint on installing those CV guards though. You will have to bend the front of the guard on the recoil starter side of the bike. If you take the shock loose on that side and move the suspension from full droop to full compression, you will see that the guard would hit the motor case hard under full compression. At least on mine it would have.
Other than that I have the warn winch, 2x4 shifter kit(adjusted for 2x4, 4x4, 4x4 locked), and an AC brand plastic rear skid pan.
Great machine is all I can say. Great suspension, handling, acceleration(for a 250), and great brakes.

I'd like to ask a follow up question similiar in subject. I have a 400 4x4 and looking for smaller ATV for son and wife. My son is 14, 5-10, 160, so a little 90cc 2 stroke does not seem to make sense. Thought about a small 2x4. AC has the 250 2x4 and compares it with the Polaris Xplorer 250, Recon, Suzuki Quadrunner, and Yamaha Beartracker. Any opinions on these or similiar sized ATVs? I did test ride a Polaris Trail Boss, 325, auto, on Sat. Seemed ok but prefer a manual with engine braking since we live on a hill. Thanks.

Well I have been waiting to reply to this post till I find the magazine I was looking for and I finially found it. IN the March 2001 issue of ATV Magazine on page 40 you will see that the 250 4x4 is good enought o be named best of the recreational/Utility class. The only other winner was the Raptor in the sport class. Thats pretty impressive considering all the new bikes that are out and all.
Now jeff_connors, If you are looking for a 2wd I think the best one would be the Recon probaly for your son. They are VERY fun to ride and a great overall bike. Real performers. IF you are looking for more comfort than performance then the AC 250 would probaly be the better choice tho.
IF you want a 4wd I would stick with the 250 polaris or AC 250 4wd. Both are great bikes, but again, the Ac is more of the comfortable model with the Polaris being on the much more sportier side.
