front or back, if it is the back you need to take the housing assembly off from the third member. (the big ball that the Axel attach to), there should be 4 bolts that hold it on you will need to take off the skid plate and tow hich, then the hole thing falls of and the Axel comes out.good luck

Keep working at it with your slide hammer. If it's a 454 and you never had it removed then it must have been on at least 4 years. Keep working at it it will come off..

I had big problems getting one out of my 454, I tried the slide hammer and still could not get it off. I ended up taking the cv apart to get to the axle stub that sticks out of the dif. then welded 2 blocks of steel on either side of the bell for the cv and used a puller. It came off but it pulled off the splines on the end of the axle stub, It worked fine after putting it together.... Bill

This may sound kind of corny to you, but here goes. For awhile I was in the Navy and part of that time I was an Aircraft Mechanic. We would run into stuck splines and such all the time from parts being exposed to different weather extremes and such. Anyway to get to the point, we used Oil of Wintergreen to get them to loosen up. I believe you can get it at drug stores, just ask the pharmacist. Be extra careful with it because it is POISONOUS. Just use it like you would penetrating oil, let it soak for a couple of hours, then back to that slide hammer. Good luck.

Finally got it off, Had to weld my puller to the hub and use puller. It did chip off a peice of the shaft but still works. Thanks zrt1000, i dont believe it would ever have come off with a slide hammer. It had been on too long.
