I just bought a 2001 400 4X4 last week..I put on 37 miles and it seemed to work fine..it did use a tad of oil..possibly due to the break in period..I was wondering if anyone thought the full time 4 wd is a negative?
I see that the new 375 is 2 and 4wd....

TDBRPH, I paid the same for both machines, $5370 with the winch (not installed, though, I did that myself).

Bilzer, the 2002 400 4x4 is also 2wd/4wd selectable. I thought the 2001 was as well?!?

today my nephew and i were ridin' on his friend's place, he has a polaris magnum 500 and i have an ac 500a, when i noticed his right front tire was wobbling like crazy. upon closer inspection, we found that the cotter pin and the nut on the tie rod came off. apparently the dealer he had it at did not properly reassemble the quad. later on we found out that the lug nuts and shock mounting hardware on my ac fit the tie rods of polaris quads...go figure. we were lucky that we were not jumping because the outcome could have been catastrophic.

Bilzer,
I'd check to find out if the 400 could be switched to a 2/4wd machine like the 250. The kit cost about $80 and took about an hour for me to put together. So far I've had no problems except for having to once and while reverse to "unlock" (yes I know it not a true locked diff) the diff so I can switch to 2wd.

I had no idea that was possible to do with the 400..seems like a good deal for about $80.00.
Has anyone on the list done that yet?My ATV pics[*]AC 2001 400

I have a 250 4x4 and it uses the same diff as a 300. So I'm assuming the 400 uses the same diff as the 500. Hope I haven't led you on a wild goose chase. Look on the left side (if you were sitting on the seat) of the front diff. If there is a small rubber nipple then the front diff is set up similar to the 250/300. If so, chances are good that a 500 4wd-drive shift will fit. Basically you drill 3 holes in the fender and pull the rubber nipple to gain access to the cam. Slide the shifter arm on the cam and lock it in place. Good luck.

Great stories guys! Just got back from a weekend setting up my elk camp. Leave again tomorrow afternoon or early thursday morning till the 5th of Nov. Should be a blast. Took my new girlfriend for a ride on the 'Cat, got her broke in good, the old fashioned way-covered in mud head to toe, along with myself and my 'Cat-was a blast! I think that's a sign of a good woman-likes to go out for a roll in the mud with ya, then do some serious shooting afterwards-what do you guys think, should I keep her??? heh heh heh, yeah, I thought so too! Found one mud hole that was rack deep, maybe a tad bit deeper of that thick chocolate pudding stuff. Made it through all but the last 4' or so, as I just couldn't get the rpm's up enough to climb that 2' vertical wall at the end. I wasn't stuck, kept backing out, running through trying to get the r's up a bit to help pop my front end over that wall at the end from the guys running 44" swampers, but just couldn't get it done. Ended up having my buddy Matt and his wife Jenny tow me out over the trouble spot on my Dad's 'Cat. The end result was both Brianne and I covered in huge clods of mud, the 'Cat looking more like a elk wallowing in the mud, than an atv, it was great!

Next came the humerous part-the "jeep trail" (winch required for those rigs) is really tore up with deep ruts. There was water running through some of the ruts, forming mud in the bottom. Having Brianne covered already and actually laughing about the whole thing, I figured I'd drop in and roost a little just kicking it up a bit. The problem is, it is a very deep rut, which with one tire in, and one on top, has the 'Cat leaning at a severe angle to the left-steep enough in fact that Brianne and I rode it out on only the two side wheels down in the rut, the other two were a couple inches off the ground-we were really leaning hard! Matt wouldn't even attempt the first mud hole, as his wife Jenny threatened his life if she got dirty. Well, seeing me go through this little rut, he thought he'd try the same thing just to have fun, as "it didn't look that bad"-famous last words! He goes in, everything is fine, except Jenny doesn't seem to know how to lean up into the hill. It's picture perfect, the 'Cat goes in, tips up on the side, Matt leans up the hill to compensate and keep the machine at least somewhat upright without tipping over, all while dear little Jenny looks like a kid riding a horse who's saddle has fallen off on the side-kind of like in those cartoons where the rider hangs off the side of the horse before going underneath, ya'll know what I'm talking about? Well, Jenny doesn't defy gravity near as well as the cartoon guys do, off she goes face first in a little muddy water! Oh man it was the funniest thing I've ever seen! Jenny laying there screaming, Matt stopped on the 'Cat looking back down at her like "what are you doing down there"-do I even need to mention he was now in DEEP touble???

Well, with that, Matt was not allowed to drive anymore, among other things he was also not allowed to do . So, she takes over, makes it about all of 30' down the "jeep trail" before she puts it up on a steep sidehill, rolls the 'Cat over completely, leaving them both on the ground covered in pine needles. Brianne suggested it was probably wise at that point to get back on a gravel road for Matt's safety only-I thought that was wise myself, so it was gravel roads the rest of the weekend. Oh well, we had a good time though, yet I doubt Matt is allowed to go riding with me again anytime soon . Just thought I'd share that little tid bit. Hope to get some pictures posted after the hunting trip is over with, will let ya all know how it went when we get back.

Best of Luck, and try to keep the rubber side down!

Mike
