I have no idea why. I thought it was because the oil was low, and I needed it changed anyway so i got a new filter/oil.

It is still coming on though, does anyone know what might be causing this and what I can do to fix it. thanks.

btw, its a 2000 300 4x4.

If I remember correctly the 300 is an oil cooled motor. I don't remember if there is a fan on the cooler or not. If there is make sure it is working. Another thing is the jetting. If you are running a little lean then it will cause the motor to run hotter. Change your plug and check the jetting. You might also try running a different temp plug. CR6e CR7e CR8e. 6 is the coldest and 8 is the hottest. If I remember correct.
You also could have a faulty sensor. Take it in and have it checked.
Depending on what type and weight of oil you are running you might try and change the oil. Summer is comming and temperatures are getting hotter. Make sure you run a heavier weight oil. (try running a synthetic blend). Make sure your air and oil filters are clean and installed properly. Make sure the cooling fins on the motor are cleaned out. If there is mud or dirt get it out. Inspect your oil cooler to make sure the fins are not bent over. Hold a fan up to the cooler and make sure air is passing through the cooler. Clear any bugs, mud or anything else that could be blocking the fins.
Thats about all I can think of right now. without more information it is hard to dial into the problem. It would be helpful to know how soon it comes on? Does it stay on or go off? What are your riding conditions like?
let us know what you find. If you need further help then just post it.

Thanks a lot for your help. I will go check all those things now, but in the meantime i will answer your questions.

I live on a hill and riding around normal the light will not come on, but when i come up the hill it will. Makes sense. It will then go off.

I just changed the oil and filter, and used 5w-30 oil because i do a lot of riding in the winter.

Thanks again for your help. I think I will just take it in to the dealer.

It sounds to me like you have a bad sending unit. Before trying all of those other things, get the sending unit checked. I believe how it works is there is a resisitive circuit that as the temperature warms this circuit goes to ground and turns your light on. It sounds to me as you climb the hill the circuit is going to ground for some reason. I would check this first if it was me.

I would have to agree with Immature, it's most likely your sending unit..
buy a new one or have the old one checked if you can find someone that knows how to test it. just my (.02)

Well I seem to be on to something. Yesterday I was replacing my headlight bulbs and when i took out my burnt bulb the high beam indicator started to work again(it stopped working for some reason a while ago), the thing is tho that it is backwords. Whent the lights are on low the indicator comes on.... thats not the wierd part. When I turn the lights on low, the engine temp light goes off!!!! I can sit there and flip between the two lights. While i was doing this I also noticed that when i pull my brake the engine temp light grows brighter. The nuetral light does not work anymore either

On a side note neither of the front lights work now. I checked them with a multimeter and nothing. The socket for the bulbs both look a little melted... wierd!!

Yet another thing wierd with my electrical... the brake light only comes on when i brake, it is off otherwise and i am positive it is suppose to be on (like a car).

Anyways, I am thinking something is very wrong with the electrical system and the temp light is the first thing that started to show up... when i replaced some bulbs that i thought were burnt out i noticed it was bigger problem.

ANy ideas ??? This is very wierd to me!!! Thanks for all your help!!

Hi, you may have a short, when two or more wires have melted together or a bare wire is grounding to the frame, it could be around your engine or exhaust pipe. but first lets check the fuses. If they are okay then check the head light wires high and low beams and sockets on both sides then check the wires around your brake relay. Your brake light is only to come on when you apply the brakes. Also look for any broken wires around the handle bars and gas tank. I hope this can help you

Thanks for the help. I don't think there is a short, i went and looked around and couldn't find a thing. Everything looks fine. Are you sure the brake doesn't stay on? I am almost positive that it did.

Where are the fuses located? thanks.

SiiLT, Yesterday I was following my buddy and he was driving with his lights on, and the rear brake light has a tail light, so maybe thats why it is on and you never notice it before.
