New ATV'er... have question about my 2001 Arctic Cat 500 4X4
#1
Hi All,
Yesterday, I bought a 2001 a used Arctic Cat 500 4X4 (almost new - 231 miles) and everything was fine when I took my test drive yesterday. The person I bought it from said he had only taken it out a few times since he bought it in May 2001 (new girlfriend shortly after buying the ATV... Need I say more?). He hadn't taken it out at all this year.
The machine looks brand new but, today, I went out bushwacking and had some problems with it stalling and backfiring . I thought that, maybe since it hadn't been out in a while, that might be causing the backfiring problem. It seems to be idling a little low but I can't figure out why it stalls when I come to a stop.
Any ideas?

It may just be a old fuel thing going on. You could drain the tank and carb and refill with fresh fuel. Also mice could have built a nest in the airfilter box, I have seen this before. Just check it out and do a service on it first before you get in to it too much.

Looked at the air filter box (air filter is still new) and, nothing. I'll drain the gas and see if that makes a difference.
Is there an additive I can put into a fresh tank of gas to clean out the fuel injectors? Should I bother?
Thanks,
C.

I found my 98 500 4x4 did this until i did a close up exam of the boot from the carb to the engine and from the airbox to the carb. It was not correctly installed on the engine to carb end. It was sucking a little air and caused a lean condition as well as the symptoms you describe.

Not uncommon. Try draining out the gas (if it has the same gas in it) and putting in a fresh tank. If it persists, then you can have somebody (or do it yourself) take apart the carb and clean it out, then replace the spark plug.
Last week I pulled the carb off my uncle's 454, dismantled it and cleaned it out good. Then I cleaned the air filter and put a new plug in it. Runs like a champ again, and it ran like crap before. If its in need of this, it really makes a noticeable difference.
