Anybody else have problems starting their 400i after sitting for a few weeks? Eventually I had to remove the air cleaner and spray wd-40 up the intake to get it going. This has happened the last two times the quad has been sitting for about 2 weeks. This quad has under 200 miles on the odometer, but it used to start fine this winter and spring.

Perhaps this is a warrenty issue?

Barry Ill tell you a little trick my dealer showed me , push down on the choke when you start it , ,theres also a primer on the carb ,did you try this , didnt you buy yours before me , my warranty is gone , did you get the extended warranty , and now the choke is spring loaded so it will pull back to full choke when you let off , then turn it back to off , hard to explain ,if i was there i could show you easyer , he showed me this on the o1 400 and it works on the 02 to , try the primer to , also turn on the gas maybe 5 minutes before you try to start it , I got 750 miles on this one it starts better then the 01 and runs better to ,hope this helps

I bought mine after yours.

I know about the choke lever, about pressing it down and letting it spring back up and repeating. I thought this was the priming mechanism. Is there another located on the carb? Or are we talking about the same thing.

When I tried starting it up, I pressed that d*&%m choke lever a bunch but it never did a bit of good! Thanks for response.

 

Barry the primer is on the right side of the carb , little lever on the top of the carb ,check page 52 of you manual it has a pic of it and explains use, top picture is the primer , Ive never had to use it , but i did on the 01 , it wa s about 10 below ,it fired right up , how you quad doing other wise , okay , o you need to hold the choke down ,not pump it , the primer is the thing you pump, hopr this helps

I bought my quad from a dealer about 400 -500 miles away as the local dealer did not want to deal AT ALL. I met this dealer about half way in a small town he happened to be going to visit relatives, and he transferred the quad to me there. He did mention the primer, but I thought it was in the choke mechanism somehow....WHAT A DUMMY!

I did a quick look and sure enough there is the primer lever on the right side of the carb like you said.

Not a problem Barry , any time glad to help , hey just hold dowm on the choke lever till it fires ,then release it , you need to ride it bud ,best think is to clean out the cob webs , check you pm ,. I sent you one , glad to help again , and your not a dummy ,

When starting my cat (cold) I give it two or three good tugs on the throttle, and then fully choke the engine. Next I hit start letting the engine chug along or a few minutes and then turn off the choke letting the engine sit or a few more minutes. Cats are known to be cold blooded...

 

Thanks for the reply TG!. I use a similar method normally, and it sometimes takes a few cranks. However, the two occasions I am talking about, the machine had sat for at least 2 weeks (maybe more) and absolutely would not fire up. I tried everything, but began to worry about cranking an engine over so much without lubrication. Perhaps I overreacted to possible engine damage, but I know I would never turn over a vehicle that much.

So now, the next time this happens, I will try the primer lever. I want to know that I can start this machine anytime, because when I am back in the woods moose hunting in November I do not look forward to walking out in the dark! Probably will still carry a can of WD-40 just in case <vbg>
