Default spark arrester

Hey got a '98ac 454 with a little over 1,000 miles on it. The owners manual says to unscrew the spark arrester on the muffler every 900 miles and blow it out. I can't get that thing off for nothing, is it going to mess anything up? Also any tips on getting it off would be appreciated, rounded that thing off pretty good. Thanks

If you have access to a heat wrench I would say heat it up and try a pipe wrench on it. Use caution. You do mean the plug on the muffler?

i have a 300 and the same problem. i have taken mine out twice but the last time i tried it just strpped right off. so now it is a circle and could not get it out with anything. not tried to heat it yet. will probably torch it out and replace with a bolt. but really thinking about re-doing entire exhaust if some one would make an inexpensive replacement.

I had the same problem getting mine off. I did just as Win3858 says, add heat and pipe wrench and that should do the trick. Of coarse you will have to replace the plug. I know mine was pretty ravaged by the time I got it out!!!

If you haven't cleaned the carbon out for a REAL long time you may have performance issues because of the carbon blocking the flow of the exhaust. Potentially.

I don't know of anyone who has had any real by "forgetting" to clean out the spark arrester. I usually do it once a year.
