you will need to pull the recoil off then the left side case, exposing your tranny so you can check through the teeth on both sides for the tranny itself then for the shifter.
mine snapped few years back so I used vice grips till the head gasket went out, so I made myself an adapter from a quads crash bar and welded it to the rod
