Help ATC guys.....
Ok.... I posted this in the Suzuki forum, BUT i NEVER GET ANY HELP FROM THEM AT ALL!!!!!!! So I will ask the people that know what the hell they are talking about..............
OK this is on the 86 LT230s...... I have rebuilt the carb, all items are set to book specs, all stock(carb stuff), running premium fuel. Intake is 100% sealed!. I have added a pic of the plug to my pics........
It starts hard......
You have to idle it up when you first start it or it just dies
After you run it for about 3 minutes it idles itself up to about 2500rpm, so I idle it back down
Irattric (sp?) idle
and the darn thing never starts with the decomp lever activated
OH yea, it also runs like a hunk of junk with all the air filter and air box off, as soon as you add all the restrictive stuff on is does pretty good
Other than idle the bike runs great with the throttle pushed.......and hints would help, THANKS!

Congratulations, You are the proud owner of a Suzuki i just looked at your pics and your running lean richin up the mix a little. The cause could possibly be from maybe the engine being bored out at one time and the jetting never fixed or something like that.

I have never heard of that before. Here is the way that i understand jetting. The pilot jet controls the the amount of fuel for idle ( the main jet is closed via the needle ). When you give it throttle then the main jet opens up and takes over because the needle is now moving in an upward motion. The black soot around the edge of the plug is likley just some carbon from the inside of the cyclinder thats getting on the plug and sticking because there is no "fire" coming from the outer ring. From what i have learned i would say no that is an incorrect opinion.
The way i check for a lean condition is as follows
With a new plug crank it and run it wide open then let off the throttle and shut the engine down, coming to a rolling stop ( with the clutch in ). If it white then your lean.
The way i have always checked my pilot jets is take it down the road ( slightly downhill seems to help with this ) under real hard acceleration and then just let off the gas and allow the motor to slow the bike down. If the Quad backfires then the pilot is to small. When i use the term backfire i mean it sounds like a shotgun went off ( My Raptor would shoot a flame out 2 feet out of the exhaust ).
The pilot jet is not likley the culprit though i would play with the main jet a little bit, also is the float and air screw and any other adjustments set correctly?
Hope this helps

OK...I got a little pissed at this POS this weekend, after kicking it about 70 times if fired and I held it WOT and after about 15 sec the exhaust head pipe was near a see through red about 6" from the head..........are we talking WAY too lean????????
I have the carb in a dip tank right now, but all items were set correct, and everythying still looked spotless.....Any guesses on how much I should jump up on the main jet, or the idle jet?????

thrash, we never help!? im insulted, come on man i would say that your pilot needs to go smaller, and a richer main jet, also check your carb intake boot, and make sure its not ripped, that was very common on those bike, is it low on compression, because of the starting?

Vinson581...... sorry man, don't take offence; speaking of the majority, not the whole!
Why do you say the pilot needs to be smaller?
The intake is in prime condition, and I sealed it with some awesome stuff we have at work(no leaks I can promise)
Compression is above factory spec, last person put a weisco 10 to 1 punched 50 over
