Oh also what is a good gear ratio to run for mid-top end speed please tell me what gears to get.

Default Cam for 200x

all years except 84 and 85. You can order a new one at servicehonda.com part # 14101-446-000 for $57.36 and that is for a new camshaft. I just ordered a new one for myself yesterday. I do have a good used one but I am really fixing my x up and desided to go with new. I am building a back-up motor and my old one will go in it. My xr bottom end will be here in a few days for my back up motor. I wont be in a hurry getting it together since it is a backup motor. I may do a tech article with pics on how to convert for the forward kick for everyone.

You will need more than just the camshaft itself.

DO NOT FORGET THE CAM BUSHING AND THRUST WASHER!!!! These pieces are not included with the camshaft.

Too many people throw in new cams without replacing these parts. If you go with a new cam, get a new bushing and thrust washer. If you go used, get the bushing and thrust washer THAT WAS USED WITH THAT CAM!!

I know I am using alot of CAPS here, but trust me, the $30.00 for those two parts are required if you are planning on building this engine right the first time around.
I know some who have never done this and they have never had a problem.....but I have seen it go the other way just as often. To me, it isn't worth the risk.

knowsalot .. should the rockers be changed too? .. I heard it will wear the cam fast if used rockers are used with a different/new cam.... true?

Default Cam for 200x

short4stuff,

Thanks for bringing that up because I din't think about the rockers at all when I made that post....and that coming from someone who has never installed a new cam on these old engines without installing new rockers with the bushing and thrust washer.
There has been a time or two that I have used the old rockers with a new cam, but only with those that are in great shape.
The rocker contact area with the cam is important, but no where near as important as the actual "riding" areas of the camitself, and that was what I was getting at in that post.

New rockers from Honda are expensive, but a good quality set of aftermarket ones can be bought through anyone using J&M as a supplier for aftermarket parts.
