3 wheelers
I don't know about banned. There was a ten year agreement between the Govy and the big four. Manufacturers would stop making trikes for ten years, and the government wouldn't sue or create any sanctions or whatever. After '96 I am pretty sure you could produce a three wheeler, just noone wants the risk and liability. I actually am surprised that there aren't any "Do-It-Yourself" kits sold. Maybe a frame kit and you supply the motor or something.

There are quite a few people out there making their own threewheelers... Most are taking a larger dirtbike (XR500-650, CR500, etc.) and retro-fitting a quad style swingarm/carrier/axle and later style (250R or 350X) front forks and wheel assembly. These things are very fast with many of the bike engines in the 50-60hp range and having quad-type traction. We currently have both a TRX250R and an ATC250R. Both are great machines, but there is little room for error on the ATC. It is all in the rider's ability and experience.

3 wheelers are NOT dangerous if you know how to ride them. I've had seat time on a YTM 225DX. It was the funnest thing I have ever driven. I'm hoping to pick up a ATC 250R soon. I will never go back to 4 wheelers after this. 3 wheelers are so fun. Only idiots say " they are dangerous". They take a lot more body english to ride sure, but, if you know how to ride them, you could do a lot with them. Its kinda cool how something 16+ years old is still the most technological 3 wheeler ever produced. I'm talking about the ATC 250R and the ATC 350X. Still ahead of its time because they stopped making them 18 years ago. If they still made them nowadays it would be like comparing a Lt250R with a YFZ450R. Big difference between the two... Like the other guy said, they were never banned. They had a 10 year agreement. They could make them now, but there would be too much liability issues. It would be like 1987 all over again. Then, they would be banned for another 10 years. People nowadays want the fastest and the most powerful quad, bike ect they can get. Even if they don't know how to drive them. So some idiot kid would get on a say for instances a brandnew ATC 450r trike and kill themselves. Then there soccer parents would sue. Many more parents would follow. That would cost too much money for the manufactures so they would have to stop making them AGAIN. I think 3 wheelers have had there time, and they will never come back again. It would probably be better off. Sorry for rambling

well the first time riding a trike. yes. it tends to be more of a learning experience. but after your first ride you start to realize how ur trike needs to be handled. i went out on mine and rode it like a fourwheeler. and yes. it was fairly dangerous. lol. but i realized i must do alot of things differently. like leaning and slowing down a little more. yea u can make sharper turns. but if u go too fast u do a bicycle. and sometimes that can be fairly dangerous. if everybody was a little more aware of how a threewheeler must be rode. it would probably be in production still. and yea. i would absolutely love to see one of the big four come out with a new trike. but. i wouldnt want it to come out if it was crap compared to most of the atv's. that would just put shame to the name. if they were to make one again. i would want it to perform either as good as the old ones. or even better.
