Set the valves at .002in
If you had anything to do with this rebuild: What was your piston sidewall clearence, what were the ring end gaps on the rings? Were the valve seals replaced? Were the valve seats checked? I have NEVER, EVER fouled a plug on a 4stroke engine I rebuilt! Someone didn't do this rebuild correct!

Sounds like your in need of a needle/jet set for the carb. This is something we see a lot of at the motorcycle shop I work at. Almost all ATCs we get in need a new needle/jet set. This would be the needle in the center of the slide and the jet that it moves in and out of. When they wear they flow a ton more gas into the engine causing fouled plugs and dark smoke. For about $30 and 30min you will have a fine running three wheeler. There is a Moose kit available for the 185s, this is not as good as the Honda kit. We recently tried one, because they are about half the price, and it didn't work any better than the wore out Honda parts. Once new Honda parts were installed all was good.
If it was oil smoke it would be blueish white, not anything resembling black.
