ATC200 Help!

Default ATC200 Help!

I have an 84 ATC200 that I cannot get to start, even with ether. I have excellent spark, good compression and it's getting fuel. I tore into the top end yesterday and it all looks good.

1. Could the manual compression release be the problem? It stays in the up position all the time. It will move freely
when pushed down, but the spring automatically returns it to the top when let go.

2. How do I set the timing on this engine? There are no timing marks on it that I can find.

I appreciate any help, I'm really trying to get this going!

well i dont know about the compression lever other than if it has good compression its not the problem. to set timing there is a little sliver link on the timing chain and a little dot on the gear those to have to be lined up. then on the flywheel there is a t and a f the t is for timing and the f is for fireing line the t up to the notch in the block. the timing chain and gear should still be lined up but with the flywheel lined up they should all be at the top in the little grove were the chain and gear are. you may have to take off flywheel to move chain on bottom gear

I recomend NOT USEING EITHER!!! If you use it wrong you can seize your rings to your piston...

Just as long as your compression lever stays shut and you have good compression it will still run. The only thing the compression lever does is hold the exhuast valve open for eaiser starting...



How long has it been sence youve had this atc running last???

Default ATC200 Help!

Just bought it not running for $75. Everything internally looks good, just cleaned the tank and rejetted and cleaned the carb. I really think the timing is off. Good compression, good spark, and fuel flow, rings and cylinder look good, not sure why else it wouldn't start!

pull start it, to many machines which have sat for ever just needs a little help on the first few times they've been put back in service using the trans/tires to turn it over is alot easier than your arm.

There is a mark on the cam gear and there should be a mark on the head, it should point up. There are no marks on the chain, when the timeing is in the right spot there should be no pressure on the valves. There is a little pin that holds the advance I believe should point up and the cdi pickup points also should point up. I have a manual for that bike and have built many.

what are you talking about? there is a mark on the timing chain its the silver coloured link i timed mine like 5 times and know thats how to time it.

that silver link is where they put the chian together at the factory, if you are doing that it is completly unnecessary. The only timing marks you need to worry about are on the flywheel and on the camgear. The only other thing to worry about is having it 180, but if that happens there will be pressure on the valves. Taken directly from 200x manual check the alignment of the cam sprocket, make sure that the alignment mark ' o ' is straight up and is aligned with the V- notch index mark on the cylinder head cover . If it is not reposition the cam chain on the sprocket so that its lined up. The flywheel needs to be on the T mark and lined up with the stationary pointer. I see nothing about a silver link, it won't hurt anything if you do but nor does it make a differance. I have manuals for atcs 90s and up and quads up to 300ex. Had my own honda shop for 15 years.

yea well my manual says silver link in chain must be lined up and it worked good ever sense. and its not were it was put together

I would like to see that manual, is that a honda factory manual whats the name on the manual? maybe I will learn something new.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img] Not all timing chains have silver links, I know D.I.D. chains do not. how many bikes have you built?
