Yamaha 225dx wont start!
Hello guys, I ended up getting another 225dx this week and it was running great, anyways yesterday towrds the end of my ride it started to buck and kind of surge, and idle really rough. Well I figured maybe it was a bad plug so this afternoon I fired it again and it was still running very rough and would not idle. I chenged the plug and now it will not start! I even tried the old plug and NOTHING. It sounds like it is going to fire, but it wont. I pulled the carb off and hosed it with carb cleaner, drained the gas and checked the petcock and all are good. The trouble is I dont smell gas, like I figure I would if it were flooded. PLEASE HELP me I had a big ride planned for tomorrow, and to top it all off I only have a pull start so my hands are torn up now! I did a compression test and my number was 140 psi, so that looks pretty good. I tried some starting fluid and it fire and ran for a few seconds, so I must just not be getting fuel?
I really need help!

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!
Ok first off I tell everybody I see tryin to use startin fluid NOT TOO!!! It will burn your rings up and could sieze them to the cylinder... It sounds like your jets are clogged. You can't just spray them with carb cleaner and expect them to be perfectly clean. You should take an air hose and spray out all the main jets and check your needle and make sure its not stickin. If you do not have an air compressor you can get/use torch tip cleaners to clean the jets out. Take the jets out and see if you can see through them if not take the torch tip cleaners to them...

I will give that a try, and no more starting fluid! My brother has a 225 as well so I may pull his carb and put it on mine to see if that is our trouble. I did that comp. test after trying the starting fluid and my number 140 psi, it would probably be alot lower if I messed up the rings this ti,e around dont you think?

With a compression tester, that you can buy at any auto parts store. They usually come with 2 fittings(2 different sizes). You take the spark plug out and screw in the fitting on the end of the tester then crank her over for about 10 seconds. You can see the guage moving up while your starting it. Much easier with electric start if you have it.
