ATC 70 Hard to Start/Runs Like S@#t
#1
I have an 83 ATC 70. Its very hard to start and when I get it started it runs like crap. It back fire's thru the carb and is hard to keep it running if you manage to get on it to ride it barley has enough power to pull you on a flat hard surface. I have been told its either the points or the valves need to be adjusted. I don't have a repair manual. If any one can talk me thru this process or scan and email me a section of there manaul would be great. If i'm way off base can some one point me in the right direction. Thanks for any help.

Make sure you have good fresh gas in it. Make sure your air filter is clean. Did it run good before and then all the sudden start running bad? Give us a little history on this trike, like it sat forever ect.....

Here is a parts breakdown click here
Honda ATV Parts
put in the info of your ATV
A full tune up sounds like a charm
Clean the Air Filter
While your add it change the oil & New Gas
Change the Spark Plug gap... 0.028 in
Points Cap ... Gap... 0.014 in a little tricky getting them set patience is needed.
Adj Lifters (Valves) ... 0.004 in
Good Luck.
If you still have a problem Do a compression test lb/sq in.
120 to 130 is very good
115 to 120 is OK
110 to 115 less than OK

The guy I got it from said it sat for a year. I drained all the old gas replaced the air filter. changed the spark plug. and went thru the carb. I have had three and four wheelers since I was a kid. This is the first one thats had points. Is it possible for the points to go bad?

Had same problem
Adjusted Point gap which is also setting timing on that engine runs great
I also found that a multi meter with audible is graet for checking when points close
Point gap on this engine is most imporntant as it is awasted spark engine meaning the plug fires every revolution like a 2 stroke
Unlike a normal 4 stroke which only fires every other stroke
Point gap about .012-.016"
This is probably what is causing backfire
